Gold from Belgium and the Netherlands

Both of them have KITTIES on the reverse! Extra double plus good! (actually, they are a stylized lion, but it's close enough for me to a kitty!!!)

Both were purchased raw at the Fremont Elks Coin Show today.

One dealer had half of a case of world gold coins, most in very good condition. I went through them all carefully and made some selections. I then put them back and did it again. And then when the dealer pulled a few similar coins, I mixed it up and did it again. Every time, I would come up with these same two coins. They appear to be a little on the pale side; I suspect that silver was the fill in metal rather than copper.
This dealer also had one of those Japanese 'golden surfboard' coins. It was not for sale, but I got to turn it around in my hands under a strong light. What a unique experience!

Belgium first...the mintage, I believe was around 125,000. This coin was made only in this one year; there were two versions. One said 'DER BELGEN', the 'flemish inscription' and the other said 'DES BELGES', the 'french inscription'.

Although this coin looks very nice, I see a little bit of wear on the shoulder. I know nothing about this series, but I would guess that this is an "AU" coin and that is a tad of wear rather than this being a weak strike. It is packed with luster.

Now, the Netherlands...4 million of these were made in 1917. They were minted every once in a while, not every year.

I would guess that this is a lowish MS coin as it is full of luster but seems to have lots of small hits on the obverse.

These coins appear to be absolutely packed with luster and in very good shape. I should really retake these images with more diffuse light, but i'm trying to capture luster here (and hits and scratches apparently)

My 'OCD' disorder manifests itself in the following way: I like my raw and silver coins to reside in an airtite. And, if the coin has edge lettering, I like that airtite to be the kind where you can see the edge. So why is this a huge problem recently? Life was simple when all I had was US Gold. Only four sizes of airtites were needed. Now, it is a giant mess and I have all sorts of coins in oversized containers rattling around. I want them all in the _RIGHT_ container. Oh my.

If anyone can fill in any trivia, history or tidbits, i'm all ears!
