German/German States coin price guides

Where can one get fairly accurate prices for these coins (especially those of the Kaiserreich)? I think that there are only fee-based services. I notice that Krause has an offering called 'Numismaster' and the website Moneytrend similarly has offers to use their pricing. Anyone ever use either of these services? Or use another source? A few reputable dealers I have talked with say that for world coins (including German), published pricing is seldom relied upon. Rather, it is a much more unscientific, 'fly by the edge of the seat', intuition when deciding whether to buy a coin for inventory (and hoping to resell it for more). As a fledgling German collector, I wish that there were a more scientific, systematic way to price coins that I shop for....

I use the Krause guides to determine relative value and mintage figures
then cross check with closing ebay auctions to get a rough real world value.

    Definitely more art then science...
