Old Becketts - what to do???

So I just realized that I've got a stash of probably 75-100 Beckett magazines from the 80s and 90s buried in my basement. Is there any interest / market for these, or should they find a way into my recycling bin for Tuesday's collection?

No idea on specific covers / players or anything, so I can't help out if anyone was wondering if I have a specific player (could probably check later in the week if someone really wanted a specific one).

Thanks!

No real market for them as far as monetary value. Put them in the bathroom. They make excellent reading material.
  • Options
I think theres always gona be somebody interestead in them, either for the player on the cover, to see old prices or one of those people that had a story in that particular copy.

They sell on ebay anywhere from a buck to maybe $5, so thats not to bad. If you list it, they will come. lol

Old becketts with Jordan, Ripken, and a few select players will have some value, but the vast majority is
recycle material. I am not sure if they are worth listing on ebay. You may want to just sell them on the board.

Good luck. I also have stuff that I need to clean out.

I also believe you would be better off trying to sell on the BST board but just do not expect too much for them. Player collectors, myself included, would have interest in any with a specific player on the front. I personally would be interested in any in decent condition with Mattingly, Ripken, Ryan or Dale Murphy on the front.

Cool, thanks - I'll take a peek through for good covers and maybe post a few in the BST here, then leave some on the curb as recyclables.

    Thanks!

For some of you who claim there is value in them, what are you willing to pay for your fav player on the cover? Just curious..

Plus, if you figure shipping and listing fees on Ebay, they're not worth the time it takes to list them.

Since there seems to be some interest, I'll go through and make a list of the covers I have available. I'll sell them for a buck or two, plus postage (I imagine $2 per shipment would do the job.)

Yes, I do have basketball (and probably some football and hockey as well). I'll PM those who have asked for specifics.

    Thanks again!

all the one's I had ended up being recycled. Even the one's with stars on them. The only one's I was able to part with were at shows if I gave them away for free.

I would be up for a half a dozen or so of baseball that no one else wants. I don't care about the covers, like Playboy, I read them for the articles. image

PM sent; I need baseball 1986-87 and 1997-99 and I want to start a good 1990s football run. I might even do b-ball if I feel like it. I always loved reading these becketts growing up in the 1990s and in the famous words of the Boss (no, I don't mean Steinbrenner), I like to relive Beckett's Glory Days. image

Wasn't there a part of one of the Major League movies where the manager is questioning a player about that? I think the mgr assumes that the player just looks at the pictures but the player says that he does read the articles because he does want to learn about the chicks. image

You know, I found a bunch of those too and was fascinated reading about them. I think they are excellent sources for information on the late 80s early 90s errors and variations craze. They are all listed at one time or another and they even had a column for them. If you are going to recycle, please rip out the Errors and Variations columns and mail them to me!

I definitely don't want to hijack scooter's thread, so please only use me if he doesn't have what you're looking for, but when I was in Jr. High and High School I used to collects Becketts. I have 2 of every issue from October 1991 (Issue #79) through November 1996 (Issue #140). One issue is MINT and untouched, placed directly into a sleeve while I was still at the card shop (don't ask why, I have no clue), and the other was just read through once and then placed in its own sleeve. I'd have to dig them out of the filing cabinet in the back of my closet, but if you need any or want to make an offer on the entire lot, I'd also be interested in trading for cards, PM me please.

No, I'm not opening a store or anything, but it is fun to read them. You think that's wierd? I'm actually thinking about starting a run of World Almanacs from the 1980s/90s. There's a guy on Amazon that's got nearly all of them in hardcover form (MUCH tougher to get than the usual softcover) but he'd have to give me a HUGE break on the shipping before I'd even consider it. What can I say? I'm a history (and gov't) major for one, and second, I remember my 7th grade Social Studies teacher had a huge run of National Geographics from about the 1960s or so to the then present (1994) so that's part of my inspiration as well. I'm also nearly finished with my 1980-2000 Topps football set run (just need 1997 set) so I figure a nice run of Beckett football from the 1990s would go great with that too.

Surely someone that has a HOF logo for their icon would understand. image

After Sunday's 8 runs in 2 inning performance, I'm not sure of many charities which would accept that....

I used to have a comic box full of them but it ocurred to me one day that they were worthless - into the recycling last year.

I kept the oldest one, the Braves covers and one Frank Thomas that was still in the mailing sleeve.

Remember the aggravation of the card shop getting their copies 3-4 days before it arrived in your mailbox?
Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

Try shredding them and mixing them with some banana peels, apple cores and horse crap, for a very nice compost.

The ones with Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco will help produce extra large results.
