    *sigh* you cannot compare two athletes that compete in two completely different sports! This is one of the more extreme comparisons. One is not better than the other overall, each of them are/were the best at their sport. Shall we throw Lance Armstrong into the comparison?

    image i thought that was kinda a dumb statement too- every great sportlegend is thier champion in their field,im pretty sure jordan cant swim like phelps , and phelps probably cant play basketballimage
    now watch-he'll be on wheaties next week,mark that one downimage

    at least thats over , now i can watch gymnastics & misty may and welch in beach vollyball in peace image

    In the world of olympic swimming - Phelps is King.

    I'm in awe of both - regardless of what Costas or anyone says.

    What Phelps did is amazing, simply put. Jordan is the (arguably) best basketball player ever. Is it hyperbole? Of course, and Bob is guilty of it. But we are still seeing history and something amazing. Lets let Bob run his pie hole (like ESPN, CNN, Fox and every other news outlet will) but lets also take a sec to honor a stunning accomplishment that we are lucky enough to witness......Sorry guys, I am getting off my soapbox now and going to crack a beer dedicated to Senior Phelps.

    I don't remember what sports guy said this but after Tony Romo's season last year he was already comparing him to Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, and Steve Young?!?!?! I love the guy but come on, let him play a few more seasons and win some super bowls before you go on with garbage like that!

    edit to add: It might have been Gumble if you can call him a sports guy image

    I think it is summed up that Phelps is being referred to as the Michael Jordan of Swimming and....

    not that Jordan is the Michael Phelps of basketball.

    Yeah Phelps, you could have controlled all of this media hype but nooooooooooooo you had to go out there and win 8 golds you selfish bastich.

    The media ALWAYS does this, and ALWAYS will. They're always in a major rush to crown someone the best (blank) all time. I just laugh it off. I come to my own conclusions.

    The guy is amazing it does not matter what kind of spin Costas or anyone else tries to put on it even though that is their job , they have to say something .

    The win two nights ago was simply one of the best performances I have ever had the pleasure of watching . . . AND !

    I have never had any interest in swimming until watching Phelps .
    If you just don't like the guy for certain reasons that is on you , I'm sure he couldn't care less .

    In the water, nobody can beat him, that fact has been established.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I'm not exactly sure if anyone has said he's the best athlete of all time , but you can give credit where credit is due .

    He may not be the best of all time but he definitely ranks right up there with the best of all time .

    Watching all of those swimmers the passed few nights I was amazed at the amount of energy one needs to use just to finish the race , not to mention win it against some of the best in the world !

    I think I am in great shape for my age {39} But I don't think I could ever finish a race like that given the pace they race at .

    The pace of the race was mind blowing to me , God bless all of them , they're all champions in my mind each and every one of them .

    Yup. I remember after Jim Everett's first season with the Rams, everyone was calling him the next Montana. No one remembers him anymore. Speaking of that, whatever happened to Curt Warner?

    I can swim well , maybe you and the rest of us can swim well .
    Phelps would make a fish proud, he swims a lot better than just "well"

    Just think about this one thing . . . think about all of the energy the kid exerted in just one race , not to mention all of the races

    8 golds in one olympic ?
    How many can say they have done that ?

    The come from behind wins , especially the last two were mesmerizing .

    Edited to add : It is not very often when you get to witness true greatness , that was so exciting to watch

    This statement is totally bogus because Jordan can't swim! He might even be afraid of water, I believe I have heard of that in the past.

    Seriously though what Phelps was great for the sport of swimming and we should all sit back and realize what we have witnessed. One of the greatest Olympic performances ever. No need to be down on the guy because Costas made a silly comparision.

    Cmon, I've been reading posts on this board for at least 2 years now and I know that most of you folks are intelligent and intuitive. Or perhaps in reality, this is just another thread that allows us to complain about something. Point being, what do these athletes all have in common?

    1) Muhammad Ali
    2) Michael Jordan
    3) Tiger Woods
    4) Pele
    5) Michael Phelps

    I think that's the point Bob Costas was trying to make.

    Curt Warner is with the Arizona Cardinals. Probably will beat out Matt Leinhart for starting QB for Cardinals.

    Once Leinhart is flushed out of the pocket , he really has a hard time making anything happen , the only thing he has on his mind is not getting snapped in half . . . . So I can agree with that for sure .

    It is too bad though, I have a nice collection of Leinhart cards , thinking the kid may have done something .

    I agree, he is a class act and I liked his old talk show "Later" was one of the best late night talk shows. On HBO "Costas now is a great show".
