Newp of Engraved coin***1/26 update in first post

picked this one up a local show today......opinions welcome!

1/26/09 update:

i was recently alerted to a coin bearing a similar engraving (thanks Andy aka 'engraved')......it is a Peruvian one Sol and was recently being offered for sale by a Canadian collector......the engraving reads "Presented to B.F. Knapp by F.C. Smith - May 19th 1869"

1869 was a good year for Mr. Knapp it seems.....does anyone have the faintest clue what either of these tokens of distinction might have been issued for?? i havent been able to turn up any clues

Are we thinking the " '69 " in the engraving is 1869 or 1969

My guess would be 1869. Very cool

It appears the obverse image was hammered down flat before engraving. What does the reverse look like?

i think he is referring to the 15 years from mintage to engraving (presumably)

That's wicked cool.

I picked up a few engraved and/or counterstamped pieces while in NC (not at the show you were at, obviously, but while I visited Aethelred).

I gotta scan them all.

Nice pickup. I really like it. After checking the fonts in "Love Tokens as Engraved Coins" I believe that it is B I Knapp. However, on familysearch.org there are a few potential BJ Knapps but no BI Knapps. It should be interesting to research. Keep us posted on what you turn up.
