Pedroia, Pence or Quentin?

Here is another question for the group. I am deciding on a player with a RC from 2004 and below are the three choices. How would you take to start a team around if you had to choose one of these 3 and why? OR who do you think is the better player.

The cards in question are
Quentin Topps Chrome Refractor Auto
Pence Sp Prospects Auto
Pedroia SP Prospects Auto

To start a team around? I would go with Pedroia, great defense and solid hitter. Ofcourse being a Boston Fan has a little to do with it though!
  • Pence had a great year last year, struggling a bit this year; good long term career hopefully. Pedroia is a skilled hitter, hustles and comes up big. He might add a little pop, but what you see today is what you will see for 10 years with him. Quentin is a wild card, I'd like to see him repeat this season, next year image then you can speculate on where he is going.

I thought I would add that I am open to any suggestions too. If they had a RC in 2004 and are playing in the big leagues let me know your pick/their card and why.

Thanks again for all the help.

Quentin could be more of an "investment' type player, collectors love the long ball hitters! Pedroia is a hustler and finds way to get hits, very scrappy. I know nothing about Pence
  • Felix Hernandez.
  • Just my opinion but I think Pence is just suffering from a little sophomore jinx and will bounce back next year. Quentin on the other hand has been a hot prospect for a few years now and apperantly he finally figured out how to hit the ball consistently.

I would go with Quentin. Like it or not long ball hitters are generally the most popular cards. Pedroia is a heck of a player on a popular team, but I am not sure if he will ever have HOF caliber numbers. The hope for him is the Sox win a bunch of World Series and he becomes a Derek Jeter like player. Not out of the realm of possibility, which makes him a pretty good gamble. Pence is a good player too, but again I am not sure how his overall numbers will come out. Quentin has shown the ability to hit 30-40 home runs with a decent average. All the guys are around the same age, so with all things being relatively equal I will give the edge to Quentin. I have not watched Quentin play a ton other than national games, but the numbers show he does not strike out a lot for a power hitter and has a decent OBP, which means he has at least a pretty good batting eye for a major leaguer.

Good luck with your decision. Though, with some of the later years it may be better to wait a little bit.

Quentin all day. Like people have said, his OBP is going to be solid. His numbers will be pretty well balanced in general and he doesn't seem to be as injury prone as other big power guys in their first couple years. Very high ceiling here. Could be a borderline HOFer when he's done.
  • This quentins first real year; lets see if he can do it again before saying he could be a borderline hall of famer lol.
  • Quentin - no question...most winshares

  • Pence all the way, but I'm an Astros fan.

    <sigh>

    obviously.

The discussion is about these three players' ceilings, right? We only have bits and pieces of information with which to make educated guesses, right?
In my opinion, Quentin's ceiling includes the the possibility of becoming a borderline hall of famer. I think he can possibly have a Dale Murphyish career. I don't think the other two guys have ceilings that high.

    Was that clear enough?

    lol.
