REDS SIGN FIRST-ROUND PICK YONDER ALONSO
1B Yonder Alonso agrees to Major League contract
The Cincinnati Reds announced Friday night they have signed to a Major League contract 2008 first-round draft pick Yonder Alonso. He will report to the club's spring training facility in Sarasota. A first baseman from the University of Miami and the No. 7 overall pick in this June's First-Year Player Draft, Alonso, 22, batted .370 with 24 home runs and 72 RBIs. He participated with the Hurricanes in the College World Series.
The Reds signed 34 of this year's 50 June draft picks, which also included premier Venezuelan CF Yorman Rodriguez, highly-touted Dominican outfielder Juan Duran, RHP Juan Sulbaran and LHP Matthew Fairel.
