1915 Cracker: PSA vs. SGC or GAI

Hey Everyone,

I've been working on an all-PSA 3 1915 Cracker Jack set since Jan, but I'm having a helluva time locating them in the desired grade. I have, however, found a butt-load of SGC 40 and GAI 3 cards available, although my previous crossover luck has been dismal. Likewise, my Raw pick-ups have also fallen short. I'm currently sitting on five (5) of these CJ cards that came back at a 2 or 2.5 (Not happy). In any case, I'm curious to know why so many submitters gravitate towards SGC or some other PSA competitor, for this particular set -- at least with regards to the low-grade CJ cards? I'd love a little insight, my friends. Thanks in advance!!

Best regards,

JK

The cards look great in an SGC holder. As to your crossover dilemma-- when I send in expensive cards for crosover I get no results either. In my experience PSA does not like cards from any other holders. I've sent in SGC 88 Mantles and they always get minimum grade even though they look strong for the grade. I pop them out and get a 8. GAI, you have to crack out if it is an expensive card. I think the crossover thing is a money maker- nothing else. I've never heard anyone on these boards having crossover success on high dollar ($1500) stars. An example is a SGC 88 1959 Mantle--I see these regularly at $2000. A good 8 can sell for $2500. Why are these cards not crossing?---easy answer: PSA will not cross them.
    Thanks,

  • I'd keep any pre-war in SGC.

A little friendly advice, you do not have to post a question in all the sports card forums, one should be enough.
  • Greetings,

I appreciate your advice, my friend, but had I posted only in the Buy-Sell-Trade forum, it's conceivable that I would not had received a single response, which has been the case. Different hobbyists peruse different forums for very different reasons, and I wanted a breadth of opinions with regard to A) Is it even worth my time to embark upon future crossovers or raw card submissions, or should I stick with the occasional PSA 3 pick-up? Or, B) Why do so many Cracker Jack submitters seem to gravitate towards SGC rather than PSA -- at least as far as low-grade CJ cards are concerned? Thanks again for your contribution!!

  • If crossing to PSA, I have only had luck breaking them out and sending in raw. If crossing to SGC then I leave as is because I feel they do a fair job of getting it the right grade regardless of the slab it came in on.

I prefer vintage like your CJ's in SGC, I feel they look better and that they are graded more consistently. For modern I use both but have many more cards in PSA holders.

Pre war cards are very desirable when found in SGC holders.

I think I saw this same question in at least 4 of the forums.
