Opinions on this Ozzie Smith auto

I have no doubt that is identical to Ozzie's signature. I've seen and owned enough to know. My question is that do you think that it is a stamped signature? Are there any known Ozzie stamped signatures out there? What are the characteristics of a stamped signature. I have a loupe, but I can't tell. The only thing that makes me wonder about this card is that I cannot see any indentions on the card surface. A ball point ink signature would leave an impression into the surface. Does this look like a ball point ink signature, or is is some sort of soft tipped marker?

    It is a stamp.

There do not appear to be start and stop points.

Areas where the signature overlap do not appear to be heavier or lighter. If a fast drying ink from a pen was used you would see some layering of ink. If a "wet" ink was used you would see lighter areas where the weight of the pen tip would spread the ink. A stamp is one even surface so the ink from it is uniform.

Ink from a pen doesn't bubble consistently like that. The exception may be if that is the glossy surface of a Tiffany but I don't think that's possible without smearing even a little bit at some point.

    Without question it's a stamp.

    Thanks. My suspicions were correct.

  • I don't know if it is a stamp or not but I once bought a group of autographs that had three Jack Morris cards in it and the signatures kind of beaded up like this Ozzie. I thought they were stamps until I noticed all three were different. I do know there are some weird marker pens out there that don't sign well on some cards. Got some cards as a mail request once signed in some kind of black marker that basically didn't even stick to the card, and these were Topps cards from the early 80's.

Interesting, because I just got an email from the seller insisting on the fact that he saw this card being signed right in front of him. Now, I don't know what to make of it.

  • It may well have just been signed by a bad pen. I'm not real sure but I think dry erase markers mess up on cards. If he saw it signed in font of him, ask him what kind of pen was used.
  • I have never seen or known Ozzie Smith to use a stamped sig on anything that was mailed to him for autographs. If the guy claims it was an in person sig, I know without a doubt that Ozzie does not use a stamp in person. I got him several times by the Cardinals parking garage, at old Busch Stadium during and after his playing days.

  • To further add, even at mass signings like the Cardinals Winter Warm Up he hand signs everything.

I'm leaning toward a funky pen, like a dry eraser type marker or something of that sorts. Look at the second "z", start of the "s", and end of the "h". The sig appears to have start and stop points in those areas.
