C.C. Sabathia ... Will He Gets Votes For N.L. Cy Young

JackWESQJackWESQ Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭
Right now, C.C. Sabathia is 7-0 with a 1.55 E.R.A., since being traded to the N.L. By my calculation, he has seven (7) more starts before the end of the season. Let's say he finishes 12-0 or 13-0 with an E.R.A. under 2.00. Would he has any chance of winning the N.L. Cy Young? I want to say yes, but my better judgment says heck no.

There is some history for this. In 1998, Randy Johnson went 10-1 with a 1.28 E.R.A., after being traded from Seattle to Houston. The Unit finished seventh in the voting receiving only two (2) points. (Tom Glavine won the award.)

That said, it would be cool if Sabathia had a decent showing in the voting.

I think the only way he is a contender is if Webb really falters down the stretch...it's his to lose right now....but you're right, he's probably in top 3 if he finishes undefeated w/ERA under 2.00..

If he keeps going like he has been I believe he will definitely get some votes, but will not be a serious contender.

Doyle Alexander just came to mind. In 1987 he and his 5-10 record were traded from ATL to DET. Down the stretch he went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA. He finished fourth in the CY Young voting, actually receiving 1 1st-place vote.

C.C. should surely get some consideration.

  • My memory might be off on this, but didn't Rick Sutcliffe change leagues and win the Cy one year way back?

Yes, in 1984 with the Cubs I believe. He went something like 18-2

    Good knowledge!

Sutcliffe played in 20 games for the Cubs in 1984, and went 16-1, with a 2.69 era and 1.078 WHIP. He beat out a 19 year old Dwight Gooden, who also had an awesome year, winning the 84 NL ROY, and posting a 17-9 record with a 2.60 ERA and 276 strike outs.

Funny thing is that with the Indians earlier in the year, Sutcliffe was struggling bad, with a 4-5 record, a 5.15 era, and a 1.66 WHIP.

  • sutcliffe was traded earlier in the season and had a few more opportunities to start.
Maybe they can have CC pitch every 4 days image If he goes undefeated with a couple more complete games and/or shutouts he will get some serious votes.

C.C. didn't hurt whatever Cy Young chances he had with tonight's performance. Complete game with nine (9) strikeouts and two (2) earned runs.

He will get votes, not enough to win due to Webb being so good as well. If this had been a down year for pitching he might of had a shot.

It's becoming an interesting argument at least. CC is now 8-0 with a 1.60 ERA which is a full 1.25 points lower than Webb. CC also has a higher K/9 ratio and a lower WHIP. Still, I can't see him winning it just yet. Especially since Webb isn't his only competition. Lincecum has put together a solid season on a really subpar team.
  • I find it funny that nobody seems to remember that Webb started the season winning his first 9 starts!

Put C.C. in Milwaukee at the beginning of the season and me MIGHT have similar numbers to what Webb has now.

edit: C.C. has a better shot at MVP than Cy Young if the Brew Crew make the playoffs. Talk about being a valuable assett......

i think he'll get votes but not enough to win webb should win it barring something crazy

but CC is pitching very well and maybe 12-0 for a playoff bound team with a great era.

  • Sabathia is 14 W and 8 L , with a 2.99 ERA -- that's good, but not likely to get much Cy Young attention.

Yeah, I know he's 8-0 in the NL -- and could wind up perhaps 11-0 -- but that ain't gonna win a CY Award. Nobody wins a Cy Young for a great "half season". Good pitchers who change leagues usually do quite well until the batters have seen them for a couple of games. Then, of course, the batters adjust and the pitcher comes "down to earth". [See Barry Zito's stats.]

As we speak, there would be at least 3 NL pitchers more deserving of the award than Sabathia: Webb, Lincecum and Volquez. I could probably name a couple of others if I studied the stats.

I know what you're saying, but there has been a precedent set that says otherwise. Sutcliffe was a unanimous Cy Young winner in 1984 after starting 15 games for the Indians (and going 4-5 for them) and then getting traded to the Cubs where he finished 16-1.

Part of the reason Sutcliffe won the Cy Young in '84, too, was that he was a major force in propelling the Cubs to a division title that season. If the Brewers make the playoffs, Sabathia will get a lot of credit, too. I'd still say Webb or Linecum are worthier candidates, though.

I don't really think CC has a shot at getting the Cy Young (he's not even listed in the top 10 on the Bill James/Rob Neyer Cy Young Predictor), but he may end up being in a lot of MVP conversations. I know it's harder for pitchers to win MVP, but it does seem like the "most valuable" aspect of the award matches Sabathia's role with the Brewers so far. I could see him getting MVP votes as a consolation prize for not getting Cy Young votes.
  • here are his combined totals

    14 wins, 8 CG 4 Shutouts, 192K's 195 IP.

if he can win 4-5 more games, he is a legitimate contender for the Cy young. Heck he leads the NL in complete games! (5) and is tied for the LL in shutouts in just over 2 months of NL play. He still ranks on the A.L. leader boards as well.

His totals make him the leader in K's and innings pitched in all of baseball.

Webb will probably win the award, but if CC continues his dominance he will (and deservedly so) get consideration.
