Does anyone here collect Austrian Talers? Who is a good dealer for them?

I just noticed these coins (never really saw one before), and the look big and interesting. Does anyone here collect them? Are they hot, hot, hot, or can you still buy one for a reasonable price? Who is a good dealer for these? Lastly, what is the standard reference for these coins? On a website, I saw a reference to "Hall Dav- XXXX variety", but I am not sure what this means.

The Austrian thalers are quite popular, yet still very undervalued compared to many coins. they can be found anywhere from a few hundred, to thousands of dollars depending on rarity and condition. They are truly historic and many are of very nice artistic merit.

Some nice examples were recently sold at the world record breaking Millennia auction:

The 'Dav' is the number assigned by John Davenport who wrote 'Large Size Silver Coins of the World' which is a standard reference for Talers and other large silver coins.

As for dealers, many carry these coins. I know Ron Guth used to have some on his site. Northeast Numismatics usually have some 'slabbed' coins.

  • M. Louis Teller usually has a few talers in inventory. You can check his website at tellercoins.com

I warn you that talers are addictive.........

Personally, I spent alot of time studying the 1601-1700 edition and 1701-1800 editions of Krause. The variety of design seems endless. The coin archives website (http://www.coinarchives.com) is a good reference also.

    For dealers, try:
    1). the forum's own JZrarities (http://www.jzrarities.com)
    2). Civitas (http://www.civitasgalleries.com/)

    Hall is a mint.

Austrian Thalers would be great to collect. As with any other series, be sure to scope it out before jumping in.

Austrian Talers are attractive and many can still be found in a nice state of preservation. I have a very small collection of about 10 and I like them

Wow. Thanks for all of the references. I don't venture to the Darkside boards very often, but I always get good responses here!
