  • Yep, the 1898 ZAR Pennies are a nice coin and can easily be found in higher grades.

The toughest date is the 1893 Penny....NEN has one for over $4,000. image
The meaning of life ? I don't know but I am sure that coins have something to do with it.

I love this series, yours is a nice example - it may not be rare but only 263,000 were made that year, 1898 being the highest mintage for the 4 year series.
1893 with only 11,000 minted is the key but even so Krause lists it at only 250 in UNC, pretty sure I'd have to pop for one if I found it in nice UNC for 250...
  • 1898 was the last year of mintage before the invasion that is the reason why you can find nice examples with MS63/64 being quite common. The MS64 trends at around 170 - 180 Euro which is approx US$270.

Interestingly enough the blank planchets, both with and without rim, which were being prepared for mintage were carried away from the mint by the boers as well as the ordinary coinage which was in the mint at the time. The blanks ( I've only seen the penny & pond blanks but perhaps other denomination blanks exist as well ) are fairly rare and trend at around $2,500 for undamaged blanchets.

The TPGs do slab these blanks but they don't assign them a grade ( ie AU55, MS61 ) as grading depends on the wear of the high points. Since these blank planchets are flat they can't be graded in the usual way.
The meaning of life ? I don't know but I am sure that coins have something to do with it.

  • We see a lot of coins from the South African Republic over here in New Zealand. The 1898 Kruger 1d. is THE commonest coin in the whole series. The rarest are the 1874 Burgersponds & the 1898 Sammy Marks Tickey (the same design as the 1892-97 currency 3d. coin, but dated 1898 & only in gold). The contemporary jeweller's copies of the Sammy Marks Tickey have no stops in the 'Z.A.R.' monogram.I have got one of these copies, which are of .916 (22 carat) fine gold.
