How Historic Is Andruw Jones' 2008 Season?!

JackWESQJackWESQ Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭
For the 2008 season, Andruw Jones is 33 for 205, which works out to a nice .161 batting average. Of course, this is bad. But I wondered how bad.

So I ran a quick search on Baseball Reference's Play Index and found out that in the history of Major League Baseball, no full-time outfielder had as many at-bats as Jones (205) and recorded a lower batting. In fact, only outfielder, part-time or otherwise, Kenny Williams had as many at-bats as Jones and recorded a lower batting average.

For the 1988 season, Williams had 35 hits in 220 at-bats, which works out to a nice .159 batting average. Of course, there really is no comparison when you take into consideration that Williams made $102,500.00 in 1988 while Jones is making $14.7 million in 2008, even adjusted for inflation.

Great post. I was thinking about doing the same post the other day. I would think at a certain point, the Dodgers will have to cut their losses if things don't change and Torre has made it clear Jones will spend most of his time on the bench for the remainder of the year. I would think Jones stats for this year will be a all time low for a player with his "Former Talents" . I'm sure the Braves are happy they didn't match the Dodgers offer.

I think I'm going to do a website called, www.nedcollettisucksworsethanandruwjones.com

This guy, although he's had a better than average career, has never lived up to the potential he created the night he hit 2 homers in Game 1 of the 1996 Series...
  • That guy needs to take the rest of the year off, get in shape & decide if he wants to keep playing baseball.

Bill Robinson had a year like that once too, it was before he had better seasons though.

Sounds like Andruw Jones got old fast.

    Steve

actually he had 2 such years, the one I remember though was the 2nd time he finished under 200.

    38 for 222 and a 171 average in his 4th season.

    Good for you.

I disagree with that. Didn't he hit 50 homers just 3 years ago?

Last year and this year he seems to have faded.

    Good for you.
  • Could be he's off the Roids and HGH.

Nomar, Jason Schmidt, Andruw Jones. Heh.

LA and SF both do their share of raiding the retirement home for past-prime players. LA, however, seems to like to raid hospitals and rob graves too.

By the way, as bad as Andruw Jones has been, it is virtually inconceivable to me that anyone will ever touch Bill Bergen. For his career, Bergen had 516 hits in 3028 at-bats, working out to a .170 batting average. In 1911, Bergen went 30 for 227 for a .132 batting average. His secret? Bergen was a catcher.

When Nomar has been healthy this year, he's played very well. Now Jones, that's another storyl

Besides hitting 35+ homers a year for almost a decade Jones also was
one of the best CF's in baseball.

I think he got old fast, it happens.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • gues the HGH wore off pretty quickly lol
  • He is the David Duval of Baseball. How a guy goes from a star to the worst hitter in baseball, by Andrew Jones. (DRUGS and cheesy poofs).

Although Duval was never on drugs that I know of...
    Am I speaking Chinese?

  • I am a Rangers fan and hopefully will get to see him in early April. If he gets the chance to play full time this year and can just make contact, he will hit 40+ HR's. If you've never been to the Ballpark in Arlington or whatever they are calling it this year, for some reason the wind always seems to blow towards left centerfield. If Arod would have learned to pull the ball when he was there, he would have had 70+ artificial HR's in 2003.
