Opinions wanted new 70's Red Sox project

Got back into collecting about a year ago with Allen & Ginter and my neglected Wayne Gretzky collection. Joined PSA and now have about 25% of the Gretzky Master Set. One of the 1st SMR magazines I received had a good article on the Reggie Jackson Registry set and decided to do a small project collecting 70-79 Topps Regular Issue Run of 10 cards in the best grades I could afford on a $200 budget with strict criteria of nice centering. I am 70% there with a total spent of $123:

70 & 71 need. 72 - PSA 7, 73 PSA 8, 74 need, 75 psa 8, 76 psa 8, 77 psa 8, 78 psa 8, and 79 psa 9.

Now I am looking to start another small project and wanted to get the opinions of the board as I find there is some great knowledge here.

The project as a counterpart to the Reggie Run is going to be focused on the Red Sox, originally I wanted to do a 70 - 79 Yaz run, but thought it might be a little boring as I am not in love with a lot of his 70's cards. Here is what I want to do - 1 Red Sox from each year 70-79 Topps, with the criteria that must be 10 different players, and nice photos or history for the player card for the year chosen. These do not have to be the most expensive cards of the player just the one you think would be the best for this type of run. I will probably use the same $200 budget and will be looking for the best examples of the grade. Whatever 10 get the majority of mentions will be what I focus on. For my part I love the 77 Fisk. Pictures and opinions welcome. Thanks for the input, Chris.

I like the 77 Fisk. Peek at my registries. I have a number of 70's Red Sox's PSA sets going with pics.

Your '79 card should definitely be the Jim Rice. A wonderful image that captures him at the height of his greatness.

Good stuff so far, very nice sets Vito.

The 79 Rice and 74 Fisk are definites, what does the fisk go for in 7 & 8. Is there a nice Burleson 77, 78? He is one of the first players I remember being a fan of back in 80 when I started collecting.

I forgot about Scott - he will fill one of the 70-72 slots, I would like to get a nice Lee and I think I like the 76 Tiant.

    Keep the suggestions coming.

The 75 Burleson rookie isn't bad. Has 1970's written all over it
  • If you are getting a Fisk, why not just get his 72 rookie? A PSA 7 can be had for about $35 or so.

Looking for more eye appeal type cards. I think project 3 will be a Fisk run as I really like most of his cards from 72-81. On a side note since I started this last night the Sox have been on a tear, came back from 1-0 against Chicago, and are now leading 10-0 in the first against Texas (Ortiz 2 Hr's 6 RBI).

Fisk has great cards in his whole Basic Set - you should do a Topps Basic set. I'm about 75% of the way through a PSA basic set - 79 cards I think. The Basic topps is only 20 cards or so. I'm 90+% on that one. I just need to find that darn 1974 Fisk in PSA 9 and I'll be rockin.

I'm definetly glad to hear that. Other than the Ryan, it looks like all the key cards are no more than $35 each, right? If only the 1971 PSA 7's were that affordable. image

I was just thinking that he had three major contenders in your time frame (the great action shots from '74 and '77 and the classic Annoyed Carlton image from his '73 card.)
