Anyone have anything from the Commodore Perry Collection?

If I'm not mistaken, Bowers and Merena auctioned the Matthew C. Perry Collection in January, 1995. Commodore Perry was the American naval officer who compelled Japan to open up trade with the US. Apparently, he was also a world coin collector.

Does anyone have any pieces from this interesting pedigree to share?

Did he have a significant Japanese component to his collection?

According to this article, he had a dozen or so Japanese bar-coins.

I also recall Civitas auctioning a Perry Papal States piece with the original auction flip and tags (I would've placed a bid if it hadn't gone so high...), and B&M had one of his colonials in this later sale.

  • Materials picked up by MC Perry on his Japan Expedition were (and still are if they exist) the property of the US Government. They were very particular about such things on that 1853 Expedition.

I forgot that I still have on my site a journal from the expedition (sold) on my site here.

    The expedition is a favorite.

I have the catalog and prices realized. I bid on some of the lots, didn't win any and can't even remember what I bid on. Out of over 3600 lots in the auction fewer than 200 were from the Perry collection.
