What are the top 10 marquee cards of the hobby?

I'm thinking baseball only.

The T206 Wagner and 52 Topps Mantle have to be number 1 and 2 in my opinion. What do you think 3 through 10 would be?

Well, if that guy can get a 52 Mantle for the 1986 STeve Nicely, that may rank in the top 15...

T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb brand back
    T206 Honus Wagner
    1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth
    Turkey Red T3 Ty Cobb
    Cracker Jack Ty Cobb
    1909-11 E90-1 Joe Jackson
    T206 Eddie Plank
    T206 Magie Error card
    1933 Goudey Napoleon Lajoie
    1952 Topps Mickey Mantle

That's my list, probably not the most valuable 10 cards, but some of them are, and in case you can't tell, I'm a little biased toward liking Ty Cobb. A lot of those cards are classics, pure and simple.

Some good cards and here is mine...

    1. T206 Wagner
    2. T206 Cobb with Cobb Back
    3. Baltimore News Ruth
    4. N172 Anson in Uniform
    5. Just So Tobacco Cy Young
    6. 33 Goudey Lajoie
    7. 52 Topps Mantle
    8. E107 Wagner
    9. 14 CJ Joe Jackson
    10. E90-1 Joe Jackson

If the N172 & the Just So ever came up for auction you would see some huge dollars spent to acquire these cards.

Interesting thread. Would be fun to do a separate thread or two for different time periods, maybe post-war only and modern.

I think to be marquee a card has to be popular, not to put down truly rare cards but not alot of people in the hobby are clamoring for a 1933 R328 Charles Lindstrom or a 1909 Cabanas Pete Hill. There is a select group of hobbiest chasing those cards or even know about them.

To me it is about RCs of key players and cards that immediately are recognized on site.

    1. T206 Honus Wagner
    2. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
    3. 1933 Goudey Ruth Red
    4. Turkey Red Cobb
    5. T206 Cobb Green Background
    6. 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson
    7. 1953 Topps Willie Mays
    8. 1954 Topps Hank Aaron
    9. 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente
    10. 1968 Nolan Ryan

Blast from the past. Landscape has changed quite a bit over the years.
Fast forward 11 years and a nice boom in vintage.

What are your top 10 now?
Here is my baseball list in no particular order. But I had to split 10 for pre war and some for post war.
    Just too many important cards.

    Pre War:
    1888 N162 Goodwin Champions - Cap Anson
1914 Cracker Jack - Joe Jackson
M101-5 Sporting news - Babe Ruth
T210 Old Mill - Joe Jackson
    T206 - Honus Wagner
    T206 - Eddie Plank
T206 - Sherry Magee (Magie error)
    T206 - Ty Cobb (portrait)
    1933 Goudey - Nap Lajoie
1933 Goudey - Babe Ruth (any)

    Post War:
    1948 Leaf - Jackie Robinson
    1948 Leaf - Satchel Paige
    1951 Bowman - Willie Mays
    1951 Bowman - Mickey Mantle
    1952 Topps - Mickey Mantle
    1954 Topps - Hank Aaron
    1955 Topps - Roberto Clemente
    1968 Topps - Nolan Ryan/Jerry Koosman
    1968 Topps 3-D - Roberto Clemente
I ran out of steam after 9...don't want to dilute the list if I don't have to.

Do the N172 Anson and Just So Tobacco Young, exist as a graded card from SGC? PSA doesnt show a single copy of either one in their pop report.

As long as we're on iconic cards? Honus Wagner T206

I thought I'd dredge up something I found many years ago.

If you notice the envelope is dated April 17, 1958 - the letter is from Charles Bray.

Bray along with Lionel Carter, Jefferson Burdick e.g., were collector kings of the hobby way back when.

Based on this? I think we should "all" start wearing ties and suits when at the National.

Now, it's 1958 and we want to buy a T206 Wagner - how much should we pay?

What if I said 25 bucks?

    You'd say. No way!

    Well, way!!!

Suits and ties at the Natty - I like it. Mike you go first and we will all follow. “I guarantee it.” 😉
