Pretty poor attendance at the Olympic womens volleyball competition yesterday, the place didn't look like more than 20% of capacity.
I know it was raining but come on........

Yes, I would put it right up there with sailboat racing and badmitten (how did that stuff get into the olympics anyway?)

Ballroom dancing was considered for the Olympics a few years ago but thankfully did not make the cut.

One of the reasons they eliminated softball is because the Americans are so dominant that they felt the competition was
unfair, also, the London Olympic people decided that they didn't want to build a stadium for a sport that would only be
played for the 2012 Olympics and sit empty afterward. Economic reasons played a big part of the reasoning (at least that
is their side of the story).

It makes sense in pretty much the entire Eastern Hemisphere since barely anybody there plays baseball or softball.

This is basically true. Most of Europe and Africa and Australia do not participate in baseball. However, baseball is very popular
in Asia, with China always represented in the Little League World series. Taiwan and Japan also have excellent baseball players.

London did not want to end up like Athens who now has a lot of Olympic venues that are just white elephants sitting there unusued.

Another problem for softball and baseball was the proposed site for the stadium would have destroyed a long time rugby or cricket field
and they were upset about that so they pressured the Olympic committee to just drop the sports rather than make that kind of
sacrifice.

If it was up to me, the Olympics would keep all the track and field, and the swimming races, add American football, eliminate everything else, and that would be it.

I was baffled when I saw that synchronized diving, thought it was mad tv. Read they had individual synchronized swimming in, I think, 1992. Also read tug of war was in the 1900s.

What is that winter sport that these guys have like brooms, and they sweep the ice. Is it called hurling ? Isn't hurling
something you do at a frat party ? And shouldn't they have women in bikini's doing the sweeping (just a joke guys...settle down) ?
Or is it called curling ? Isn't that something a woman does with an iron ? What a dumb sport. Kind of like shuffle board.

Didn't the athletes in the ancient Olympics perform in their birthday suits?

If that happened in today's olympics, some sports would see substantial increases in attendance and media coverage [swimming, diving, gymnastics, track and field] and some would see substantial drop off in attendance [weight lifting].

I actually don't mind beach volleyball. I think it's somewhat entertaining.

Baseball got dumped because countries are not sending their best players and MLB will not test players to IOC standards. It is a shame softball got dumped. Stadium costs are an embarassing excuse to drop a sport due to US success. Put up a field and some bleechers and then convert it to soccer when the games are over. You don't have to re-create the new Yankee stadium.

I didn't even know they had team handball as an event until yesterday when I found it flipping thru the channels....now I knew about individual handball, even doubles but never team handlball.....whey is this an event???
