My how things have changed....

Came across some 1967 Topps cards recently. Two in particular stuck out for there interesting player facts:

Card #175 Bobby Knoop - "He sells tickets for the Angels in the winter."
Card #342 Hank Fischer - "He sells mutual funds during the winter months."

Hilarious! Can you imagine if today's athletes had to work in the off-season?

    That is too funny!

Here is an example of how a Ray Lewis card would look

"Ray Lewis played for the University Of Miami during his college career. Regarded as one the best linebackers in the game. Tough, tenacious and a vicious hitter.
kills people and sells drugs during the summer"
  • Michael Vick is a dangerous quaterback always a threat to run or pass keeps defenses on their toes. In the off-season he breeds and shows pit bulls. He is currently spending time away from the game with his new friend Bubba.

Alex Rodriguez never fails to post fantastic regular season numbers. After each disappointing post-season performance, he enjoys pretending he is heterosexual and shopping for lip gloss.

Thank you, there is now a mixture of water and spit all over my keyboard.

Could also fill in Derek Jeter in there as well.

My favorite is when an NFL player rises from obscurity to start for a team, and then every game he plays in the announcers feel obligated to let the fans know what he was doing the previous year. Like Kurt Warner stocking shelves at a supermarket or the Dolphins' Bernie Parmalee being a UPS driver.

I agree - times have changed.

In the HBO presentation the Ghosts of Flatbush, they spoke of how many ballplayers road the subway to work and exchanged thoughts about the game with fans. Like you'ld ever see that again? image

Thanx for the scans and thread.

Another reason I hate the Olympics. I don't care that half the women's crew team tutors mentally handicapped people after coming home from work at Staples.

"Billy Beane although he is an quite average player, he has one heck-of-a work ethic declared manager Tony Larrusa. He is always ready, just waiting for the chance to jump into a game. During the winter, he practices hard working on ball handling and swinging the wood. He also pole vaults, plays darts (he always hits the bullseye) and is an avid fan of the Village People."

Growing up in Boston we used to cut through a cemetary to get where we were going. The groundskeeper was the father of Richie Hebner. Hebner a pretty fair hitter in his time, would dig graves in the off season.

During the off season Ricky Williams sells Pinneapple Express to the middle school children at the city pool.

back in the 96-97 or so, John Carter of the Boston Bruins was our UPS driver in the off season.

Sad story, but in a preseason game the following year, he got hit in the eye with a teammate's stick and ended up having to have the eye removed after several failed surgeries. He did have a great sense of humor about it though and when he came by to visit us once, he yanked it out to show us. I remember him telling me he had a tough time getting used to driving with only one eye and kept backing into his mailbox when leaving his driveway. Haven't seen him in years. Hope he is doing well. Last time I did see him, he was starting up some kind of an ice skate company
  • There is a card in the 1965 Topps FB set, I forget the player but he taught school in the offseason.

Nolan Ryan pumped gas during the off-season -- in the 60's AS a major-leaguer.
Vince Lomardi worked in a dept store during the off-season

I don't think Walter O'Malley or Horace Stoneham had off season jobs.

Matt , You don't know what the krap you're talking about.

It would be more like " Ray Lewis chaperone's LIMOS in the off season. What happens in Ray's Limos, stays in Ray's Limo. "

P.S. ----- Be careful about the Billy Beane comments . It may offend the Thensitive members that are more in tune with their inner momma.
