A ball like this should be consigned to a major auction house not ebay.
    Try Lelands.

These boards are for advice not advertising. If have any experience you already know the answer to your question (which you have already done): take it to a major auction house. I am not sure what advice you are actually seeking in here?

I HAVE AN ITEM IM GETTING TO LIST THAT HAS AN ESTIMATED VALUE OF AROUND A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS.

    I seriously doubt that.

THE ITEM HAS BEEN IN MY FAMILY FOR OVER 70 YEARS AND PASSED DOWN MORE TIMES THAN EVEN I CAN COUNT.

    Three...? Four...?

If you truly are serious, show us some pictures, and no need to be secretive about the authenticator.

Oh, one more thing. USE SOME WD-40 ON YOUR CAPSS LOCK KEY.

    Hope this helps...

to summarize what the others said:

first and foremost, quit using all caps, and learn how to spell.. the public perception of your intelligence will expand instantly if you learn how to type and spell.. that's not just an insult.. when you're trying to sell high-dollar items anywhere, it's very important..

two.. items of that nature belong in a major auction house, not on ebay..

three.. odds are strong that you are seriously over-valuing the ball..

and finally, here's something that you *can* put in all caps.. instead of "MAJOR AUTHENTICATION COMPANY BASED OUT OF NEWPORT BEACH CALIFORNIA", you can just type "PSA".. (sigh)

    imnorrfan (342 ) View Listings | Report Jun-26-08 08:42 PDT 10 of 36
Maybe the OP is valuing the item so high is because the ball is actually Ruth's "called shot" ball.

    $250,000? Nonsense.

"...ONLY 1 OR 2 OF THESE ARE IN EXSISTANCE...."

ummm....NO! There are enough of those around to warrent being listed in the memorabilia guides.

The 2003 Standard Catalogue lists the 1932 Yankees WS Ball at $4,000 IF it includes Ruth, Gehrig, Dickey, McCarthy, etc. Let me repeat that figure.... $4,000. Add 5 years of value increases and professional certification and pump that up to $6,000?

"... THIS BASEBALL HAS BEEN AUTHENTICATED BY A MAJOR AUTHENTICATION COMPANY BASED OUT OF NEWPORT BEACH CALIFORNIA."

Now, is the ball certified already by PSA/DNA, in which case you can provide a certification #, or

"...I HAVE A CALL IN TO SOTHEBY'S TO HAVE TO BALL AUTHENTICATED BY THEM...."

Sotheby's will not authenticate the ball unless you consign it to them for sale. Mastro might be a better choice since they likely have experience in selling this specific item.

    widgets4idjits (0 ) View Listings | Report Jun-26-08 11:51 PDT 12 of 36
If I were consigning anything of considerable value, Mastro would be my first choice. Beautiful catalogs, a huge number of items every time, and from what I've seen, the best prices realized. It's hard to buy large lots there that I can break down and resell for a profit, but I keep trying...

That is a sweet ball, 7 HOFers, blue and red stitched, Babe on the sweet spot, and with Gehrig (Gehrig's sig is 10X rarer than Ruth).

If you are truly in charge of selling it the only place is a major auction house, stay clear of eBay unless you want to test the waters with a good reserve.

Interesting , I would like to see some pictures , what is the big secret I don't think anyone is going to buy something they can not see?

I just auctioned a 1932 Team signed NY Yankees baseball , I used Heritage to auction the ball , it had 16 sigs, 6 of them hall of famers with of course Ruth and Gehrig , it sold for $23,900 .

It also had the red and blue stitching as you described
    and was an official A.L. baseball {Harridge}

A quarter of a million dollars , I don't think it would get anything near that , even a single signed Ruth baseball would have a hard time fetching a number that high unless it was one of his homerun balls in perfectly mint condition and graded as so , that means , the ball would grade a 10 and the sig also a 10 .

Is there some way I can see the baseball ?

The Harridge in Blue letters does not count as a signature, it is a stamping of the American league Pres .

The sigs on the baseball are as follows .
    Burke , Fletcher , Pipgras, Combs , Cooke , Chapmann , Hoag , Larry , Lazzari , Johnson , Ruffing , Dickey , Gehrig, Sewell , Wells and Ruth .

the 17 name you're calling a signature , is the stamp of the A/L pres , William Harridge in Blue .

Correct me if I am wrong .

That is the nicest Team Signed 1932 Yankees baseball on the face of the planet without question and if you're the one who bought it from Heritage auctions in Texas , you got a hell of a deal I think that was mostly due to the fact that they Faded the sigs in the pictures in the catalog and online which I was extremely pissed about.

That Ruth is a 10 in strength and none all of the other sigs exept for the chapmann never fall below an 8 in strength , but when they took the pics , they photo shopped it lighter than it really was .

Hurt like hell to sell that bad boy and I wish you the best of luck .

The thing is a team signed 32 Yankees only sold for more than the 23.900 they paid only one time that was in 99, though I don't know how much more .

I can say this with confidence though, It probably wasn't as sweet as that one, it is far and away the nicest I have ever seen anywhere .

That guy is too stupid to have actually won the ball. He probably stole the scans, and was trolling for a fast, illegitimate, sale.

PS - How great would it be if you (Anthony) bought it back for around 10 or 15K?

Man! I would die . . .I would just die , but I don't think it would be possible , I would probably pay more than what I got for it though now that the business is rolling pretty well with the machine I bought with the money from the sale .

I was told I would regret selling that ball and that is so true , it probably is one of a kind as far as quality anyway .

I am always looking every day , but if anyone ever see's it anywhere else please let me know .

Lmao, if I'm looking to buy it back , the bidding against me would probably be fierce with my luck , but you never know , especially with the economy , it wouldn't bother me to pay a little more than what I got for it though just to have it back honestly,

What i don't get is why anyone would even need to say , they had it in the family for 70 years ?

The baseball needs absolutely no explanation at all , the pictures speak for themselves , why make up anything , just say this is what I'm selling no excuses or tricks needed , it will definitely sell .

Actully I didn't even catch the part about the 70 years in the family , Nick, as always picked up on that , just like he picks up on everything else , you're not gettin nuthin over on that guy .

Why would anyone care how long one has had it in the family will that add any value ?I don't think so . .

But why buy it just to sell it a few months later , a quick flip for a decent profit ?

    But a 1/4 mil ?
I think that is a reach by a long stretch .

I was pissed Heritage diluted the pics though either done on purpose or accidently the pics online and in the catalog had the sigs 2 shades lighter than what it really was , the ball hovered at around 13 k for a while and I was like this is impossible , to tell a secret about what i was thinking while watching all those weeks , then at he last seconds of the auction it jumped 10 K, which gave me a little relief but still I think it should have sold for at least 40, If I had 40 at the time I would have paid that for it without even second guessing it .

Ugggg, I'm venting/cryin lemme stop, didn't wanna go there .

The guy is an idiot, I posted in the original eBay post a couple times just for fun (hookingfoul).

The ball is nice but it is a multi signed ball, if it was a single signed Gehrig ball it would be worth more than the team signed ball.
Dont get me wrong it is nice but many a signed ball collector like SS balls better.

I wouldn't be shocked if it was a scam. You sold it through an auction house. These days, many scammers love to visit the websites of Mastro and Heritage, track down an item that already sold, and swipe the images to try and bilk people on eBay.

I remember when you posted pictures of that ball. It was an amazing ball. $24,000 was a steal. Whoever legitimately bought it no doubt has it prominently displayed and ogles it every day.

That is interesting , I mean if that is the case, E-bay seems to have a lot of holes they ned to fix , that just does not seem too secure , so what would happen if that was the case , how would E-Bay go after the person if it were a scam , I'm sure they have to have some security in place to prevent this from happening time after time ?

It just seems way to east to possibly get away with .
  • TNTonPMSTNTonPMS Posts: 2,279 ✭✭
I just want to clarify what I'm trying to say here , we all post pics of our cards and memorabilia , all someone would need to do here is copy the pic , post it on E-bay as something they are selling , get paid for it and then send nothing ?

Or something , just not what was posted ?

I don't buy or sell on E-bay so I'm a little confused, the only things I really know about it is what I see you guys talking about here .

When I was thinking about auctioning my baseball I was going to try E-Bay but a few people talked me out of that and suggested using a major auction house , so that is what I did .

This guy came on said he had this ball and right off the bat it seemed everyone didn't believe it from jump street, but maybe because he didn't post pics , and them came up with a pic of the LOA and not the ball itself.

Edited to add , if my baseball would have sold for anywhere near 1/4 mil that day , my contest would have had some serious bonus involved image

All their lives were shattered in a nightmare of brutality
They try to carry on, try to bear the agony
Try to hold some faith in the goodness of humanity
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that she was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

    But she's nobody's hero
Is the voice of reason against the howling mob
Hero -- is the pride of purpose
    In the unrewarding job
Hero -- not the champion player
    Who plays the perfect game
Hero -- not the glamour boy
Who loves to sell his name
    Everybody's buying
    Nobody's hero

As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that you were gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

    But he's nobody's hero
    Saves a drowning child
    Cures a wasting disease
Hero -- lands the crippled airplane
    Solves great mysteries
Hero -- not the handsome actor
    Who plays a hero's role
Hero -- not the glamour girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
    If anybody's buying,
    Nobody's hero

    Hero
