It's labeled as MS60 by PCGS. I've always thought of MS60's as typically being marked up and pretty nicky. This one looks nearly devoid of hits. Wasn't sure if it has a slight bit of rub to make it an AU58 and it got a 2 point bump because of the eye appeal/toning or if it's just plan under graded.
Not that I'm suggesting you do this, but I wonder what would happen if you cracked the coin out, dipped it, and sent it back to PCGS. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if it came back MS63 or so. But then again, it may come back AU58.
DPOTD-3 'Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery'
I'm tempted to do just that but I don't own the coin and don't have the funds to purchase it right now. It's being sold for $140 and I don't even know if that's an appropriate price for an MS60 or not. If one of you guys wants to give the crack out game a shot send me a PM and I'll link you to the coin.
$140 seems a tad high to me for an MS60 but then again, I don't feel this coin should be an MS60. Also, I haven't looked at the pricing of these lately so I may be off.
DPOTD-3 'Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery'
$140 is way high, as i've purchased several MS62-64s in the past couple year for under $75 each; heck, you can still find them raw for under $50 in much better shape. That one looks like it has rub, so if cracked, i'll guessing AU58.
<< <i>Ok so either they are putting a large toning premium on the coin or they themselves think it's much undergraded and are pricing acoordingly. >>
"trolling for suckers" comes to mind. I have 3 MS65 and didn't pay over $100 for any of them. Now, if a Trade Dollar gets up in the lofty realm of MS66-68, then the price goes up quite a bit. Then, you have the grand daddy of British Trade Dollars that sold at Millennia that realized $16.5k, a beautiful specimen!
