Tim Lincecum -- the real thing?

First post to the Sports Talk Message Board. Long-time baseball fan. George Brett is my all-time favorite ...

Tim Lincecum is the first pitcher I've really liked in a loooong time. He looks to me like the "real deal" -- very much a "pitcher" and not just a hard thrower. Exceptionally flexible and athletic (and small, I know that). Reminds me of a right-handed Ron Guidry -- maybe even a right-handed Sandy Koufax! I have a feeling that he's gonna be good for a long time -- that's right, I think he won't break down. Any thoughts?

Too early to tell. He looks great but like any young player it takes more than one great season to judge how great he will end up being.

So far, so good. Here's a link to a previous short thread about the same question.

  • Chalk up another impressive (and nail biting) Win for Lincecum. Wow, he is a tough competitor. image

P.S. Thanks very much for that link PROMETHIUS88 -- I enjoyed reading the thread.

he's very good and young and still improving, i think if he stays healthy he'll be great. staying healthy is the tough part see Joba

He is a great pitcher. He better steer clear of drugs right now or mark my words it will seriously derail his career. One serious drug incident could change or end his life immediately. He better get serious about the longevity of his career. Also, is baseball going to suspend him part of next season for the drug incident?

True. Hopefully weed is as far as it goes. Timmy's been drawing a lot of comparisons to Dwight Gooden in the way his career has started: With shock and awe. Hopefully that's where the comparisons will end.

For pot, MLB doesn't suspend for a 1st time offense. They'll probably make him take a "treatment class" or something, but he won't miss any playing time.

He can keep the hair as long as he keeps winning.

If he ever becomes a Yankee, say goodbye to the long hair forever.

Just like what happened to Johnny Damon when he joined the Yanks

I'm not sure. The stuff he's smoking may be diluted a little bit. He might have gotten a bad batch. Oh, I'm sorry; you mean his playing ability. Yes he's the real deal.image

Timmy cut his hair before the winter meetings, and so far this spring, he's been getting rocked:

    7.2 innings, 8 walks, 12 hits, 8 earned runs.

He should have left his hair alone. image

I'd be more worried about his velocity. 90-91 mph today.

Tim dominated with his fastball and changeup last year. He said before Spring Training started that he was going to be working on refining his breaking ball, so maybe that's why he's not looking good.

If he was throwing 98 in spring Id be worried.

Spring is not for blowing arms out, especially very early in spring.

Its also for tinkering on stuff you would NOT do in a "real game"

    PS he is very real

Exactly. Note that Strasburg was only throwing 98. He will be throwing 103 by the time the dreadful Nats call him up in mid-May.

    Very Very Real

Lincecum is my favorite pitcher since Pedro in his prime. I can really appreciate little guys who throw hard.

(toot my own horn a bit image)
I was a pitcher (lefty) in my 15 minutes of fame (drafted by Expos in Jan 1985 4th round), and I topped out at about 95 MPH at 18 years old, but I also was 5-6 inches taller than Lincecum and weighed at least 30-40 lbs. more, and my changeup and hook were not my best stuff (I did have a good cutter and a heavy 2 seamer that ran).

He makes it look too easy, especially w/ the other stuff he has.

He will only get better for the next 4-5 years if he has no arm/back probs

He is a FREAK if ever there was one!!!

I wonder if he will get one more spring training game in before the season starts...
