Beckett disregarding an entire Country...Update...the VP of sales from Beckett just called me

Well...it's been a while since I went and bought a Beckett Baseball guide (actually it has been since they switched from monthly too every two months). I figured I would grab one to see how the new format was working and see what was new/hot and what ever...
Well...that will be the last time.
I'm Canadian and I am sick and tired of publishers like Beckett have no regard for their brothers to the north. I get the cash and the clerk rings it up at 14.99 plus tax. I figure it is pretty high but heck it's been a while...I get it out side and take a look at the cover to see that it is in 14.99 in Canada and right beside is a nice 9.99 in the US.
Why am I upset? Well for the last 9+ months the Canadian dollar has pretty much been at par with the US dollar. So why do they continue to rip us off?

You don't actually pay the printed price on books there, do you? They seem to be always discounted here.

<< <i>I think that price is more the suggested price, and would suggest that your bookstore is the one ripping you off.

Yes...when you shop at Chapters (our large book store) or any of the local sports store you pay what they say on the cover. I agree that the dealer could be a little more with it and change the price...but we all know most are greedy and see it as a way to make an extra buck (or in this case 50% more). If Beckett would just change with the times (wow I actually typed that without laughing) then this would all be moot.

<< <i>Is this why Topps requires Canadians to solve a simple math problem for redemptions? >>
Nope...here is why they do that as copied from Wikipedia
are a legal requirement attached to many contests in Canada.
The combined effect of Sections 197 to 206 of the Criminal Code of Canada bans for-profit gaming or betting, with exceptions made for provincial lotteries, licensed casinos, and charity events. Many stores, radio stations, and other groups still wish to hold contests to encourage more purchases or increase consumer interest. A classic example is Tim Hortons' Roll up the Rim to Win, a contest that offers a chance to win with every cup of coffee purchased, with prizes ranging from doughnuts to vehicles. These organizations take advantage of the fact that the law does allow prizes to be given for games of skill, or mixed games of skill and chance. In order to make the chance-based contests legal, such games generally have mathematical skill-testing questions incorporated.
The most common form that these questions take is as an arithmetic exercise. A court decision ruled that these must contain at least three numbers to actually be skill testing; for example, a common question might be "(2 × 4) + (10 × 3)" (Answer: 38). Enforcement of these rules is not very stringent, and especially for small prizes, the player may not be required to answer the skill-testing question to claim a prize. Anecdotally, getting the answer wrong is also often not an obstacle to claiming a prize. The questions are also becoming easier.[1] For contests held in the United States or other countries that are open to Canadians, the questions must also be asked of any Canadian winner.
The same section of law prohibits receiving consideration in exchange for playing the games, resulting in a related peculiarity of Canadian contests: the "free entry alternative", which is usually telegraphed by the fine print "No purchase necessary". Generally this means that it is possible to enter the contest for free by, for example, writing a letter to the entity sponsoring the contest and requesting a game piece or entry form.

<< <i>Yes, but Canada produces superior hockey players. >>
you are correct...I always thought that we should be charged extra on printed material to compensate for the great hockey stars from Canada. Kind of like a national pride tax

Hockey still a major sport? is it even still played in the USA?
Sorry we had a bad owner in Chicago that killed hockey for my generation!

If it is a major sport...I really think it shouldn't be...Golf is more popular than it along with Nascar, water polo, Sky diving etc...
Though I am the minority around here I watch baseball and football...I would actually rather watch reruns of Family Ties than a hockey game.

He and I just talked about why they have been having trouble switching the price. It seems that Walmart Canada and Chapters/Indigo are the driving force behind the 14.99/9.99. They state that if Beckett changes the price they will no longer carry the publication as they are making that extra $5.00 a magazine and have been for some time. He did say that they urge the stores to sell the magazine at the American price but it is of course their choice.
So it seems that we the Canadian buyers and the greedy corporations that sell the magazine are to blame. Them for not lowering the price and doing the honest thing and us (by that me) for paying it for however long.
AS a side he and I had a nice talk about the changes to the magazine format by going from monthly to all in one monthly.
Nice guy...still sucks that I paid a 50% mark-up but from here on out I will just stop buying publications from Walmart/Chapters and the local store that sold me this at the Canadian price.

Why not just be a man and admit you got carried away and lied about being a sports memorabilia fraud private investigator? It takes a bigger man to come clean, than it does to continue the stupid lie.
