Medal of Paul VI

BxBoy143 has a thread with an interesting medal of Pope Paul VI commemorating the 19th centary of the martyrdom of SS Peter and Paul. link
The annual medal struck that year featured the same theme and is of a very interesting style. This is a silver issue; the medal was struck in bronze, silver and gold. Gold is expensive reflecting the nearly 2 oz of gold, but the bronze and silver are very affordable.

The reverse legend is: XIX SAEC. A. S.S. PETRI ET PAULI.MATRYIO EXPLETO or "for SS. Peter and Paul in the nineteen hundredth anniversary of their martyrdom."
A lot of the later designs of Paul VI are very "modern" looking with different artistic interpretations of traditional themes. I alway thought that this very comtemporary medal really captured the theme nicely, recalling the catacombs so closely tied to the early church. Its one of those designs that really grows on you over time, and is enhanced as the medal tones.

So did I at first when I saw an untoned example, but as it ages I've changed my mind somewhat. Or, maybe my idea of creepy has moved further along.......
<< <i>Nice medal! I always thought that the portraits on this particular medal looked a little "creepy". >>
