81 Topps FB wax box rip, slab, sell raw ?

I just picked up a wax box for a truckload of 80's and 90's stuff. The provenance on the box is a little shaky. The antique/sportscard dealer I traded with, said the guy he bought it from wouldn't know how to break a case , open a box till he gets a key card then move on to the next box then make up boxes with the rest. Of course he didn't know where his guy got the box. I'm torn between ripping, slabbing, keeping it raw. My don't rip willpower decreases in direct proportion to my alcohol consumption.

Have a few Long Islands and then decide.
  • Good Day,
At least you can blame your addiction, (Ripping Packs), on Booze. I was bored sitting at home yesterday stone cold sober, ripped a 1983 Topps Michigan Test Baseball box. Pulled absolutely Nothing worth subbing!!!
    Rip away !!!!

  • Rip away. We haven't had a group rip in like two weeks and I have the urge. I also like buying two boxesof whatever I get then making a full box to put away once the key cards are pulled.
  • If you yourself didn't pull this '81 wax box from a factory sealed case then I would recommend not ripping the paks. '81 fb wax boxes are notorious for being "cherry picked" in search of the potentially very valuable Montana rookie card.
"Cherry pickers" can expect to find on average one Montana card per box. So they will open a pak at a time from a 36 count box until the find the Montana card. Then they won't open the remaining paks. They will do this with each box. Then they will take all the remaining unopened paks and fill back up the boxes. Many "cherry pickers" use surgical knives to very carefully open the side flaps of the wax boxes and then glue them back down once having filled the boxes back up. So even if the paks you find in your wax box look untampered with this is no guarantee at all that the Montana that once resided in your box is still there! Personally I wouldn't even chance it. If the paks look untampered with and in clean condition then I would just play it safe and slab them.
When it comes to '81 & 84' Topps football wax boxes you have to be very, very careful who you buy them from. It can be brutal out there people....

  • Well it only took a bottle of wine with dinner. I knew from the first pack they were reseals. I opened the rest so I wouldn't be tempted to try and sell them by the pack on eBay. Almost 1/4 of them were useless because of gum and wax stains. These are the only cards that were not commons and I have to believe that they were not HOFers when the box was put together. (I know Simms isn't in but he's listed in SMR)

I wonder if Gary would like to buy some wrappers and gum.
  • I was afraid of that. Just too many thieves out there these days!!
