Worst & Best ACG Crossover stories to PCGS

It seems there are a lot of ACG haters on this forum. But how many of you really have tried a cross over to PCGS and what was the results? Maybe even pictures?

I personally have never owned any coin in a ACG holder but there was a few nice toned "coins" in ACG holders. I wonder......

  • Ofer. That's O-for, in other words Zero.
Remember, by law, they are "allowed" two grades higher...
In some cases, that's big bucks.

Never owned one, never want to own one. The beauty of Ebay is I can see what others own, and know I do not want to be a part of it.

  • I had a box of ACG coins that come out of several deals and made a bet with several dealers that I could get half of them in real holders. I cracked them and sent them to PCGS. Half came back in slabs and half in body bags. The slabs were each one grade lower except one coin which was a grade higher(an awesome buffalo nickel). I worked on cleaning up the body baggers removing wax and skin oil etc. and resubmitted about half of them. Half of these came back in slabs. I then sent all the body baggers to NGC and got about half back in slabs mostly two grades lower.

So of the original box, about 3/4 slabbbed with all but one coin at one to two grades lower.

  • billywls,
Sounds like you didn't do too bad. I guess it would depend on the value of the coins really. So how many total did you start out with, 4? Of if it was to long ago to remember any guess image
Your story gave me some hope at least if I find a real steal and the coin doesn't look to bad I might try.

One more question what kind of solution did you use to remove the crude? Any special technique?

I wouldn't want the graders to be biased, so I wouldn't bother trying to cross an ACG using the crossover service.

In the past I've cracked ACG coins and had several that graded the same and a few that upgraded. However, these were the old ACG slabs where their grading wasn't so horrible. Old ACG slabs with Ikes in them can be great buys - especially the clad Ikes!!!
  • I've owned two ACG coins in my life

One IKE MS 66 cracked out and crossed to PCGS at MS 66

One Franklin MS 64 FBL cracked out and crossed to PCGS at MS64 FBL

Two for Two...Not bad. Granted both coins looked pretty solid for the grade.

I bought a 1861 Eagle as MS-60 from Ebay for AU money. Mostly worried about it being cleaned. My dealer looked at it and said AU, NOT cleaned. Sent it in and it came back Slabbed AU-53. Baggy, but lots of luster was still remaining.

  • Yeah I would like to see what the old ACG holder looks like too.

Tom, Did you crack out or did you send it in as slab for a cross over?

My eagle was in the older holder, the one with a picture. I cracked it out and sent it in raw. It is an PCGS AU-53.

  • It is a nice AU Eagle without too many deep scratches. I have a couple Liberty AU58 Eagles that look much worse than yours, because the scatches are deeper.

I still have a couple PR--DCAM kennedy's in AGC slabs that I need to break out and resubmit to NGC/PCGS. One of the coins should cross and the other is maginally a CAM, not a DCAM.
I have never seen a Peace Dollar that I did not like!!
  • I cracked a 1912 $2.5 and a 1912 $5 Indian from MS63 ACG slabs and sent them to PCGS. Both came back AU58. This was back in my"dumber than now" days and fortunately I only paid AU money.image

I had decent luck cracking/resubmitting acg coins, although I haven't purchased one in approx. 1.5 years. Not worth the risk, most of the time. A cute little Walker set I purchased, all coins slabbed out with ngc. They were good looking coins. I wouldn't dream of purchasing an acg coin sight unseen. I feel I liberated those Walkers, in a sense. They're free now............image It's funny, a local dealer just came across a small Barber quarter "estate", all certified by acg. The coins weren't all that bad, just a bit overgraded. Most of the coins were slabbed in lower mint state grades, and were really (my opinion) au coins. They're out there.
