Veinte Pesos - Pictures posted

The next piece i'd like to get is one of these awesome coins:

imageimage

Not necessarily in this particular year; the picture above is just a sample photo from the web.

The basics...It's a 27mm coin of .900 gold with a .4823 gold content. Similar to the size of a US eagle. Or a modern golden dollar.

I think it was minted from 1917 thru 1921 with the other years, 1958 and 1959 being bullion restrikes.

Can anyone suggest a good book or other resource for information on this series? I'm interested in knowing if there are any other things about this series that are important before a purchase is made.

What's a good source for a coin like this? I see them on eBay, but I hesitate buying raw coins there from an unknown seller.

Thanks!

    Adam,

    Mintages:
    1917 - 852,000
    1918 - 2,831,000
    1919 - 1,094,000
    1920/10 - 462,000
    1920 - incd above
    1921/11 - 922,000
    1921 - included above

MS-64 or higher are hard to find and they go quick if you do find them !!
Good source .... let me know when you find one.

Well, it looks like I have obtained a restrike in MS-64.

So, when i've got it in my hands, i'll be certain to post the best photos I can!

  • I don't know where i could find one on Ebay or maybe a forum member that might have one, But i love this coin.

Well, there is sort of one here on eBay.

    Link to auction

However, I don't buy raw coins this way. The photo is blurry. The coin appears to be AU with luster breaks. I see a few other things that are bothersome. Without a clear return policy, with photos like this...I won't pay melt. Typically, something bad is being hidden.

The one I managed to get yesterday, thanks to the gracious help of Silvereagles82, is in NGC plastic and the picture is clear enough to let me see what I am getting. The one I am getting has a copper spot in the ground that the eagle stands on. And it has an 'Eliasberg' pedigree noted on the slab which is sort of an unusual surprise.

This one on the bay looks like it has luster breaks, some grunge rubbed in, and probably some digs, spots or cleaning that cannot be seen in the photos. (can you tell I have purchased raw from eBay before)

This coin has a big brown spot on the reverse. Normally, such a large spot of that color would be very unattractive.

    Yet, where is it?

    In the ground.

And the details of that area are such that it's actually a little difficult to pick up on.

I've never had a coin that had a large spot in such plain sight that could hide so well and integrate with the coin. It's partly psychological, partly physical.
The rest of the coins that I saw related to this one also had spots, but in pretty bad locations in the field.

So, now on to the next goal.

I think I may like those thaler things. Big pieces of silver, many with fantastic designs. Most with plenty of history behind them. I suppose it's time to keep an eye out for one that speaks to me.

The tongue in the center? Maybe the design was so elaborate and difficult to carve, this was the artists way of finishing such a detailed piece. Sort of an attitude/effort/fatigue indicator. I've felt like that when Very Tired. Bleh.

Today, I recieve a photo certification for this NGC coin. I have never sent a coin into NGC myself; I have never seen one of these laminated photos before.

I'll tell you one thing. I take a nicer picture.
