OT: Paris...

To make it not completely OT, these are the pictures I took while looking for Numismatic shops in Paris image Loved the city! 4 days was not enough time to drink it all in, but it was a good start. I'm definitely coing back again in the future. My trip also coincided with the Bastille Day celebration, so I got a chance to see a concert and fireworks at the Champ de Mars in front of the tower. And the food!!! Simply awesome image

Hope you like 'em:

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. Dan I used my Canon 5D camera with a 24-105L f/4 lens.

    Loved Paris. Fantastic city!

Gastronom was in a small Russian part of Paris. Found it when I went around looking for Russian places to eat (and drink).

She's a friend of mine from the States who was working in Dublin over the summer and wanted to see Paris before going home. So she became my travel companion for these 3 weeks.

From the looks of things, might want to travel with her more often, she seemed to enjoy the trip.

I have that same lense. I have to say I have taken some great action shots with it. I was looking at a used Canon professional body for $3k, but I am uneasy about buying used. I will have to be happy with my xti for another year or so. -Dan

It's a great lens. I keep it on my Canon body 90% of the time. If you're looking to invest into a full-frame SLR, wait until November when the upgrade for 5D comes out. I'm sure the older models will drop in price a bit.

You're not allowed to use flash photography, because it damages the paintings, but I don't have a flash on my camera. As a side note, I was getting a bit frustrated with people that were disregarding that rule. On the other hand, I would assume that all the paintings on display in the Louvre are reproductions with originals stored in the vaults...

Especially the Mona Lisa, you can sit there on any given day and watch the Japanese tourists taking flash pictures non stop.

    Enjoyed 'em! Thanks!

I'm surprised they let you shoot pictures in the Louvre? Particularly of paintings like the Mona Lisa?

Most museums I have visited would have a pair of beefy guards tackle you the minute you so much as took a camera out of a bag. You should've seen the not-so-diplomatic response I once got upon trying to take pictures outside the entrance the Money Museum in Richmond (VA). I wasn't even inside yet, and was trying to snap a shot of Aethelred (the forum member, not the deceased English monarch) and our buddy Tim outside the entrance doors, and this guard came shouting at us.

The one coin that stood out the most for me in the museum? A Darkside coin, of course. A 1486 guldiner. Awesome.

Roman, do I detect a soft spot for sculpture in particular?

    And the food!!! Simply awesome.

I realize that it's almost blasphemy to say such a thing on these boards, but the food is actually so good that it's worth spending your numismatic budget in Parisian bistrots instead! Especially with such nice company. Slurp. image
