I have seen some gambling on the boards as of lately. Who is up for this one?

I just saw this on ebay a few minutes ago. No feedback but has a return policy and accepts paypal. Not sure the coin even looks proof. Who's up for the gamble?

I threw a little snipe on it. I need a replacement for my 41 proof set! image

I'll bet the seller saw the AW monogram and mistook it for a mintmark. I also think the flip insert has an ANA logo on it. So if this is a legit n00b seller with no idea about coins, I can see where those two entries came from.

For the record, I will not be putting any of my own money where my mouth is on this one. image

After reading the responses, I'd say gambling is highly addictive. image
    Edit to add:

No pun intended, mad one !

I just read the questions and replies as well. Were companies even designating Mercury Dimes as "full bands" in 1980? I thought that strike designation was a more recent invention.

Edited to ask: what is the downside risk if the coin winds up a nice MS65FB business strike?

If its a MS65FB business strike its probably worth under $50. At this point it might still be worth the gamble.
  • don't want to read too much into this.. but looking at the photos I notice what appears to be an old staple holding the flip closed... which would make me believe the flip as not been opened in quite some time... but... there is a photo of the coin out of the flip showing the reverse... so not sure what that means... but... image

    good luck to you gamblers!

It may be a dumb question, but does anyone know what the Brill stands for? We have an old-time collector in our local coin club with the last name Brill, it'd be pretty cool if it's something he sent in a looooong time ago...

I was guessing "Brill" stood for "Brilliant" as in "Brilliant Proof".

I just asked the seller how he photoed the reverse if the flip was stapled. Here is his response

"I unstapled the Plastic Fip to take the photos. Is this a No No?

Brill may stand for Brillo Pad. image

Take it, it's up to my snipe limit already, I was going to throw $75 at it.

i have a feeling this auction is legit.. but i also have a feeling
that this coin is not a 67 proof... more like a 64-65. just a hunch.
most coin grading companies were not exactly the most honest
folks when they were also selling the coins.

a flip, a staple, a piece of paper allowed them to mark up coins
to insane levels during that time frame to individuals who did not
have a clue how to grade.
  • jmj3esqjmj3esq Posts: 5,421
After a few emails to the guy i think its legit, too. There is just something about that coin taht I dont like. I also doubt it grades PR67. I just wonder how well it would clean up.

Wow the sale price shot way up there at the end. I think that guy needs to thank me for exposing his suspect auction. image

Who knows maybe someone got one hell of a deal.

I'm shocked (not really) that none of you have said anything about one of his other listings....

I mean who wouldn't be attracted to an auction whose header is "Silver Dollar Uncirculated" ? image

I'll bet at least one of you were praying that it would stay under the radar with that title... image

    "Silver Dollar Uncirculated"

The seller informed me that he was just selling some old coins he and his parents had in a safe deposit box for many years. ALthough we have all heard that one before. I still think this could be legit.

I swear that looks like a "4" and not a "5" on that CC $. Pic's too small on my monitor. Anyways, you let the cat out of the bag.....image

I emailed the seller when the auction was first posted. It came up on a search looking for anacs certificate coins. He listed it as anacs certified. I believe he responded to my question in the auction itself.

well at least that ending price does allow the possibility of a small
    to medium profit IF
the coin is a proof and it grades higher then 65.

i am doubtful it will grade higher then 65 but worth the gamble
to people who are into that sort of nonsense.

the nonsense of throwing money around and wanting to play
the tpg game.. and then reselling on ebay most likely and pay the
fees from both ebay and paypal... spend a few hours of your time..
just to make some minor cash.

if it grades 67 though ;-) ah greed and the things it makes people do.

I am negative by nature but some of you are much more. To me that is a legit auction but just a 100 dollar coin. He may have very well paid 750 for it like he says.
