Is this Bust half fake?

Hey guys does anything see a reason to think this coin is fake? I thought it was real, but something about it is sitting funny with me and so I'm asking for an extra set of eyes..

Lots of metal bubbling on the reverse at 12:00. Could that be from a rusted die or a cast counterfeit?
Fake, no luster or anything resembling a US coin!

  • Hmmm, see my thoughts were that it just has a "flat" look due it it aparently being a scan and not a digitial photo,

but you guys really think its fake?
  • Im no expert, but it looks wrong. Something is not right with it.........

There are a few odd things that could be explained by the photography. Try posting a few more images.

It's a bit dull looking and there are those rim hits, but I'll be in the minority and say it doesn't really look fake to me.

I'll put it this way- if it is fake, it would've probably fooled me.

I can see why the color might put some folks off, though, and subconsciously trip their alarm bells. Also, it's a reeded edge piece, and those can look funny for a millisecond, if you've been looking at lettered edge pieces for a while.

It could be a cast copy, but I don't see anything that makes me think this is a counterfeit Bustie.

Here's my PCGS AU-58 1838 half dollar. The words "Half Dol." look very weak on my, so any weakness on yours I would attribute to striking problems.

    It looks real to me.

Looks real to me. 1838's look a little different than the earlier years to me, something about Liberty's profile.
My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!

looks OK but OVER dipped all the luster is gone. Try the weight test. Another simple is the sound of it on glass. Not the greatest photo to judge with!

Nothing in the photos struck me initially as the coin being an obvious counterfeit. Is the coin's weight correct? Does it have the right "sound" for a struck half in the correct metal?

Unusual spacing of ER in LIBERTY; high E and low R.
Crooked shank and die chips at end of middle arrow.
Die chips and ragged lines at end of third arrow.
Dentils on reverse are large to the left; smaller and ill formed to the right.
Leaf between talons is very weak.

Are these anomalies caused by a different die variety?
Would these anomalies be apparent on high grade coin like this?
Better look closer or pass and play safe; IMO.
