TWO halfpennies. One British (the ship), and one Irish (the piggies).

Pretty cool. The date of the Irish piece is on the inside. But it's from generally the same time period.

Now how did I know you would know these coins???? Were they valuable at one time, or just commoners?

Common coins but very high on the coolness scale.

is it a container of some sort?

    it looks lighter or lock-ish...

I dont understand the use of the wheel-part.... what purpose it could serve.
    hmph.

    I think he said it's a lighter.

The coins themselves are common (though some of those Irish halfpennies can have decent catalog values in high grade). Mounted like that, they've lost their numismatic value, most likely, but that's a moot point since the whole thing is worth more as a curiosity than the sum of its parts.

Does it work, by any chance?

    how does it work?
open up to expose a wick of some sort? I guess the wheel throws sparks inwards toward the wick?

is the adjustment screw for the wheel?

It's definitely an OLD lighter. Probably contemporary with the coins.

I would not be at all surprised if it had some value as an antique, to the right collector.

The adjustment screw is for the flint to rise into the wheel. Here is a pick of it opened. There is another screw on the bottom, it is to fill the reservoir with lighter fluid.
