gai - 86 fleer pack rip

need some direction on this one. i purchased an 86f basketball pack last week, graded 8.5 by GAI. had it shipped to work (typical). i got in this a.m. after being out last week and busted the pack. pack had no evidence of tampering that i could visually tell other than being very easy to open. all cards had corner wear and OC and they were in no sequence as most (if not all) legit packs are in.

i've emailed the seller to ask if he was the one that submitted the pack for grading as he has had many 86-88 fleer packs/boxes for sale in the last few weeks.

would you contact GAI directly? or would you think the non-sequential card order is a fluke from the factory? i'm looking for a little standing ground with GAI as i think the pack was altered.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

The pack was resealed but I don't think you have any recourse. Every pack has the cards in an alternating sequence.

GAI packs are a big risk and once you open them you're stuck. No way to prove what happened. If I was the seller and didn't know you I would call buyer's remorse.

I used to love opening packs but I'll probably never open another one.

Edited to add - he recently bought 3 packs from bbce - can you tell if one is the one you bought?

it is definitely buyer's remorse after the results of the pack. had the pack been legit, there would be no remorse.

David, I think you are out of luck.

also on fleer basketball packs , aren't they all sequenced? why would anyone open (unless it was a jordan pack)one since you know what you are getting 99% of the time?
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,753 ✭✭✭
    pack,
yes they are sequenced but you only know at best 1/2 of the pack.

    Thanks,

  • Opening any Gai wax pak is risky and opening any Gai wax pak with the newer designed black bordered label is even more riskier. If your intent is to never open a slabbed pak and just to keep it for "eye candy" then Gai paks are fine. However if your intent is to open the pak for card grading purposes then I would strongly recommend opening only PSA slabbed paks. You'll have a much better chance that the pak is indeed unopened and additionally if a series is listed you'll have a much better chance that the cards within the pak will be from that series. Experience speaking I can't count the number of times Gai has incorrectly identified the series on wax paks!!!

I had the same experience in February with a GAI graded 1986 Fleer basketball pack. I have opened over 30 GAI graded 86 Fleer bball packs (it is an addiction) and February's was the first that wasn't sequenced and obviously a reseal job. Fortunately the seller agreed to give me back half of the purchase price but that is mostly because I spend over $5k a year with them on unopened material. I don't think I've given up on GAI graded 86 Fleer packs but I haven't bought one since and I normally buy one every other month or so off ebay. I am trying to put together a PSA 9 86 Fleer set from self-submissions. I finally gave up on the Jordan (after 4 submissions of different pack pulled cards) and bought one already graded a 9 but that is it. I have 80+ different PSA 9s from the set.

I don't think you have much recourse with the seller. It would be the equivalent of cracking a PSA graded card, sending it in for re-submission and then getting a lower grade or evidence of trimming back. You can try and contact GAI but unless you are a good customer with them I doubt they will help you. There is no way for GAI to know that your story is legit.

    robb,
good points. i agree they have no way to determine if what i'm saying is legit. i don't expect them to believe every tom, dick and harry that complains, but i'm emailing them and will see where it leads.

the seller has been very cooperative and quick to respond to emails.

    Thanks,

    Hi David

I'm really sorry to hear about this but I'm with Lee on this - very little recourse.

Just think if you were selling them - a guy buys a pack - gets squat and then asks for a refund. The ebayer is selling the graded pack on faith value of the brand with no other guarantee I would guess.

And as someone stated and I kind of agree - graded packs are for buying - showing off and then selling - for the most part. Opening? Probably wiser to buy a lottery ticket.

    Good luck tho.

    stone,
thank you for the comments. i don't think there's anything i can do either (or GAI) but i will ask. it is definitely a gamble.

i guess the basketball gods will simply not allow over $2k in profit from 2 '86 fleer basketball packs.

you're other pack was mellow gold however.

Is there a way to physicaly look at a pack and tell if it has been resealed. What type of glue or adheasive is used on a resealed pack?
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,753 ✭✭✭
i ended up contacting GAI. it is currently in their possession.

    Thanks,

  • David, I am really sorry to hear this happened to you. I wish I could add something that the other posts haven't but unfortuantely, they have it covered. I would like to add, that I purchased the PSA 9 Jordan from you, Great experience working with you. Card is absolutely georgous, I can't wait until my boys get old enough to appreciate it one day.
