2008 Beijing Olympics Coin Pictures

So I was in the flagship Olympic merchandise store in Beijing a couple weeks ago and took a couple of pics of the bigger and more expensive coins/bars there... Pretty cool collector stuff, but pretty pricey. All of the prices you see, divide by about 6.8 to get the price in USD.

I wonder if a potential purchaser of that would have a whole collection of giant gold?
I don't understand why people don't keep threads like these positive instead of taking cheap shots at another country, China or otherwise, with comments like "fake scenery" or some quip about counterfeits.

That is some of the best LIVE pics I have seen from Bejing and very sweet to see some new gold they are putting out as I have enjoyed the Panda series.
Did you pick up anything for yourself??

because many of us are not going to watch or even care about
the olypimics in a country like china.
why were the skies blue that day? maybe because they shut
down hundreds of factories for the last few weeks due to the
repressive power they have over the people.
"On March 10, Haile Gebrselassie, the world record holder in the marathon, ruled out competing in the race at August's Beijing Olympics. The city's notoriously bad air pollution posed a threat to his health over the 26.2-mile course, the Ethiopian runner said."
as for the coins, absolute collector garbage that has no value over
melt and previous "collector items" from the olympics shows this
past history out as fact. I cannot even think of one exception unless
you count owning an actual gold medal from a famous athlete...
edited to add: to the OP, thank you for taking pictures and sharing
them with us... but i just do not care for collectibles of this type.
over priced bullion.
The store was a zoo as well. At the end I decided to buy something, but then the counter was flooded with too many people and it just wasn't worth it. It was astounding how many different versions and shapes and sizes of everything they had. It was overwhelming. The Chinese are very excited.
Here's a couple more pics. Yes, that is a TV screen in the side of the building.

I've been to China many times on business, and always note China is not the place to buy any precious metal item. Gold and silver (let a lone Platinum if you can find it) tend to be at least 1.25 x what I can do in the States, and forget precious gems...diamonds are ludicrous!
I did almost buy some early silver Panda coins celebrating the 2008 Olympics back in 07, but just felt things were too expensive, even then. I think most of the coins I was looking at were .999 silver, but at about 3x the value of silver (then).
I have another trip coming up and will be looking...maybe the post-Olympic hype will die down enough to make a purchase somewhat palatable.
BTW: I have mixed emotions about the pollution issue: It is true the Chinese Govt. required half of all factories and half of all automobiles to shut down/off for a full month prior to the Olympics. The Freedom loving American in me hates the loss of Liberty. But given the teaming masses China is dealing with, I don't know that even that will be effective. I do tend to believe, however, that the communists have a pretty limited time over there...they let in the Capitalist Beast (and its latest in-vogue handmaiden, the Internet), so it's only a matter of time...

What exactly is positive about Communism ?

When I was there I asked a lot of questions...
And aside from the suppression of religion and a few other things, the US isn't much different than China. It didn't used to be that way, but that's where it seems our country is headed.

So the only difference is we have freedom and the Bill of Rights. Sounds like a BIG difference to me.

<< <i>Yes, 50oz of gold I believe. >>
Of all of them, I think that coin has the worst design - sort of like in Art School when you get a really expensive piece of paper, and you wind up drawing something really stiff and forced because you got all worried about making the most of it instead of just letting art happen.

If you want to know about Chinese things, you need to go to China first, and you can talk about it. People need to use their eyes, not there ears, and need to open their heart, and not their mouth...
Thank you...
