1st Newp in a long time ~ waited years for this one

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,237 ✭✭✭✭✭
As some of you may know I'm a BIG fan of Library of Coins coin albums. I'm also a BIG fan of half dimes. So naturally you'd think I had a Library of Coins half dime album...wrong. I've been looking for just such animal for nearly 4 years now. In that time I ran across one, it was falling apart, completely handwritten over and missing some of the slides. I passed on that one in the hopes of finding one in better condition. Well that day has finally come. I just won tonight on eBay a LOC half dime album in pristine condition. When I saw the auction and the condition of the item I thought I was dreaming.

The wait for the auction to end was excrutiating. Add to that the fact that I'd be away from a computer when the auction closed so had to bid early. I laid in a nuclear bid, left the computer and tried not to think about it until I got home and checked the results nervously. Turns out I won the auction for a pittance of my max bid. The item isn't worth a whole lot of money, except to me that is. I thought I might be brawling with one or two fellow forum members/half dime geeks for this one but it looks like I may owe their lack of competition to the Baltimore ANA.

Feels good to get one, and a nice one at that after so long searching. image

now... where are the coins? image

  • Congrats! There have been things I've won before for a pittance of my max bid amount, too. Feels good.

Some of those albums for the earlier coin series of any denomination are tough to find!

    << <i>where are the coins? >>

First things first, had to get the album to put 'em in. I'll be putting pretty low grade coins in the album and only tackling the capped bust and seated coins. I want to keep the value of the album and it contents low so I can keep it in the house. I've got a handfull to put in as soon as it arrives, the rest I'll have fun hunting for. Low grade, problem free, eye appealing...those are the only 3 criteria but when those 3 are combined it can make for a less than easy search, which is perfect.

  • Realone- those are almost impossible to find for half dimes. An ebay store had one for a while with a $120 BIN. I tracked that lot also, Cladiator, but didn't bid because I am only focused on the CBHD's right now. Great looking album, Cladiator- congrats!

nice! but when are you going to step up from half-dime to more conventional real nickels?

" .... it looks like I may owe their lack of competition to the Baltimore ANA"

There is perhaps more than just a grain of truth to this statement. I recall one major national show several years ago, half dime guru Russ Logan was unable to attend for some reason, and stayed home while we all played at the show. He sat next to his computer and essentially had the half dime realm to himself, as all of the (5 or 6) half dime nuts were at the show. It turns out Russ cherried a rare Capped Bust half dime die marriage on eBay with no competition while our backs were turned.

    Nice work, Clad.

Realone, of the very few album manufacturers who made albums for the half dimes, the Library of Coins were the very best made and highest quality, followed perhaps by the Whitman Bookshelf (not the Classic), and then the Wayte Raymond National albums. I collect all of the old half dime albums, although I do not store any half dimes in them.

SWEET album! Congratulations! Aren't you glad when those nuclear bids don't have to go off to defend your turf!

I've actually begun collecting the old Whitman bookshelf albums, and the half dime book is one of the few I still lack. I'm slowly filling the 20th century books with circulated sets, and keeping the others empty on the shelf to impress my friends. There's something so satisfying about loading coins into these albums, congrats on finally finding yours Clad.

Cladiator - You're lucky. I was eyeballing that album on ebay myself.

Album arrived today and it's in better condition than I had hoped. Looks like it was made yesterday, even though the date on the inside cover says 1961. The Reiver 1832 LM11.2 pictured above is now residing in it's place and will remain there until after I leave this world. This is going to be fun.
