Yesterday I got down to Stack's lot viewing a bit early, but unlike B&M I couldn't get in until 11:00. So I went to the Science Center on the Inner Harbor and saw their Body Works exhibit. It was outstanding how they took dead people and plastisized them for display. It sounds gross, but it really isn't.
Stack's had coins from the S.S. New York, which sank in 1846 on a New Orleans to Galveston run. It is a great snapshot of what was in circulation at the time.
The Tumonium show was a ghost town due to the $50 early entry and only 1/2 the dealers had set up. This is the Maryland State Show so hopefully it will draw a good crowd today. It's at the State fair grounds, so you can't miss it.
The Towson show dealers were trading amongst themselves yesterday. I am sure there was some public there but I couln't guage it as I was there only for a few hours. Saw Andy S. there (bought a few thing from him) and he said that even HE has trouble spelling his name!

Is there really any reason why these "pre" shows need to exist?
You ask that as if there's a central organization deciding when and where all coin shows will be held, and they could simply command the pre-shows out of existence. Obviously, that's not the case.
The pre-shows exist because there are enough dealers that will support them. Simple as that.
BTW, I think the closest thing to a "solution" is for the ANA and PNG to compete for the pre-show time slot by providing more pre-show educational activities and auctions.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Off topic here Rick, but I have heard that a large percentage of smokers who visit that exhibit walk out saying they will quit. Pretty powerful stuff I hear.
<< <i>I will again make my case for an 11 day ANA, with no pre-shows, including a full weekend and closing on the final Sunday @ 2PM. This would start on a Thursday and close the second Sunday following and could even include an off day on the intermediate Tuesday or Wednesday.

I actually live in Timonium, not Tumonium!!!!!

I know, I know, but as it is the show is now too long for me personally because of my bum leg. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
