grading practices?

I was doing a search in regards to grading practices of PSA vs BGS. Is there any truth to this statement? I was always under the impression the PSA was more strict then beckett. Am I completely wrong with this assessment?

I'll take BGS for modern cards. They sell for more, for the most part, and they seem much more accurate on surface grade and corners. Makes for better confidence if you are buying online. Nothing like buying a PSA 10, and it arrives with a bubble, scratch, or indent on surface, which would knock it to a BGS 9 at best(this has happened to me on more than one occurance). At least with the BGS subgrades, you can tell where any slight issues may be, if you are buying online.

If a person is looking to submit modern cards that are nice but may have a slight surface issue, PSA would be better if you are looking for a higher grade to sell. The don't seem to be as harsh on surface or corners, as BGS, so it will usually benefit the person who is looking to sell. They are very solid graders, but not as strict on hammering these 2 issues like BGS.

The subgrades are great for condition sensative modern cards.

If you look at the sales of PSA 9 and BGS 9 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez cards, PSA 9s go for between $300 and $400, but a BGS 9 with a 9.5 or 10 in the Corners subgrade would probably sell for over $500.

Edit to add: low subgrades could be the kiss of death though.

  • I don't know man, I sent in 2 1991 (I think that's the year) Topps Gold Jordans. Both came back 9's. I had 10 of these cards and spent a good amount of time going through and picking the ones I thought could get 10's. The only thing I can find remotely wrong with the 9's is maybe one extremely small scratch on the foil. Just one experience though.
