Shaq's Most "Desirous" Rookie Card?

Shaq's career started during the "dead" era of hobby, e.g. early 1990s. That said, what would you consider his most "desirous" rookie card? Perhaps a 1992 Stadium Club Staquille O'Neal Beam Team PSA 10? Unfortunately, I think that's a pretty unattractive looking card.

    Good question.

Unfortunately he's a pretty unattractive person. As a Laker fan I always wanted to admire him for his skills and talent, but he's just big. No real skills unless he happens to have the ball right under the basket. Refused to work on his shortcomings (free throws!).

    Kids out of wedlock. Arrogant.

What's to like about him? So, does that also impact his card values? For me it does.

    It's 1992 Upper Deck 1A.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

The 1992 Fleer is a very underrated and difficult card in PSA 10. It has a lower population than the UD, which is very condition sensitive.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

If I'm not mistaken, the Tony's Pizza Shaq RC is pretty difficult. I used to have a few, but have since sold them, but my guess is the pop is pretty low on higher grades since they came wrapped inside a frozen pizza box

My favorite by far is the Beam Team but I also like the Classic Draft Picks signed version.

Not that I care, but if I HAD to have one in my collection it would be his frst Classic auto card. Ken Goldin owned Topps Upper Deck and Fleer for a minute. Which in turn gave birth to the best snake oil salesman ever, Mr Don West.

I always liked those UD McDonald's cards. they really dont seem to have much value though. Is it because so many were printed or that no one really cares about them?
  • I remember in '92 seeing the fleer rookie that came in a magazine and had perforated edges, I think if one of those surfaced in a PSA 10 it would be a big card. I just looked on the pop report and there it was 1992 Fleer rising stars golden book only one graded and it's a psa 9

For the longest time it was the 1992 Hoops Draft Redemption:

As time passed, more and more of these started surfacing and the demand became less. Now, as shagrotn mentioned, it's the Upper Deck 1A (inserted into UD series 2 packs) that is most in demand now. The whole card is black and it's tough to find without any type of chipping:

The Beam Team is always in demand, but most people don't consider it a RC because it's from an insert set, kind of like the Hopps Magic's All Rookies. There are a bunch of nichey oddball Shaq's, but I don't consider those all that high in demand even though there are a handful of people that would be willing to pay decent coin for them.

No love for the Stadium Club base set RC? Back in the day, that one sold for twice as much as the UD.
  • I would agree with the Upper Deck 1A is his best true rookie card. I think the Hoops Magic's All-Rookie Team is the single best card from his rookie year with the Draft Redemption and Beam Team close behind. Shaq is fat.

Gotta love perforated cards, I remember seeing those books at Big Lots a few years after they came out don't know why I didn't buy them all.
