Can TPG grade copper consistently?

Another thread refers to why some people break their coins out of slabs. I am doing the reverse, putting some of these copper coins back in slabs. One of my recent submissions consisted of five coins originally in MS63-64. Two major copper dealers agreed the coins were original and premium examples. One came back in MS and two came back as altered surfaces? Neither service seems consistent. Yet, you can look in the Baltimore sales and see coins that have clearly been doctored. Are they extra cautious now, with CAC and the focus on the coin doctors?
Is the attitude, when in doubt out?

You are correct about "when in doubt out."

Don't listen to the anti-slabbers when it comes to certifying high grade copper. Get the ones you can certified, if financially justified. It's worth it.

I've unfortunately bought doctored copper in holders and raw. Guess which ones PCGS took care of?

PCGS is hard on high grade red copper and for good reason. I don't think it has anything to do with CAC, and they have been hedging their bets against copper doctors for a long time.

    Care to share the dates?

  • I have a handful, 1804, 1825 and 1849 half cents. Fortunately almost all the expensive coins have graded out. One coin was in a Reiver holder originally and they put it back in the holder but lowered the grade buy one point, doesn't matter much, but was kind of funny.

After looking at the coins on your web page .... WOW!

Someone with coins like that should post more than 100 times in 5 years!!!

I would love to see pics of the copper for sure!

I feel they are not consistent and perectly original and "slabable" coins are being labeled "questionable". Certianly not all, but I feel that some perfectly good coins have been getting the shaft. Especially high grade copper. You cannot get a 67RD grade now if you had a perfect coin.

Ive got some issues on the dividing line between RB and BN when it comes to MPL;s.

I think their grading in that respect is very questionable.

No coins are graded consistently. If they were, the crackout and sticker games wouldn't exist.

I bought a nice 1812 small date penny in a pcgs 58 slab.

From my naked eye it looked fine.

Two good dealers thought the coin had altered surfaces.

I unloaded it and even disclosed to the subsequent buyer what the other dealers thought.

    It was bought anyway.

I think coin doctors are very good in the area of copper.

gee, that sounds like an artificial barrier that controls the flow of
what grades what at a whim. could it be that the top pops of today,
many of them, are not when it comes to copper? All those coins
that are one grade down.... simply not as good as the top pops?

    right....

interesting thread that just confirms what i think of coin grading
    and insiders.

I have had many coins that took 2 or even 3 or 4 submissions to be accepted by PCGS for slabbing. Including up to grade MS66BN.

One time I bought an 1850 seated dollar raw from a very prestigious dealer.

    It looked au 50 ish.

Before purchase, I asked the dealer if I could have a refund if the coin came back bodybagged. He agreed.

I told him I did not care what it graded so long as it slabbed.

    I submitted it to PCGS

It came back bodybagged. ( altered surfaces)

The dealer reluctantly refunded my money.

Considering grading is done subjectively and they use multiple graders; can the Tgp's grade any type coin with true consistency image

    no way...can't be done (IMHO)

too many slick 'doctors' out there.

That's why I have always stayed away from collecting copper coins of any kind (in MS grades of course).

    Not a chance
  • Consistency is not possible, because a basis of universal ageement between all individuals involved that establishes the definition of consistency has not yet occured. Given the individuality of humans, I suspect the agreement will never occur.Respectfully, John Curlis
