Rainbow Toned IKE- opinions? - Let's see your rainbow coins!

What do you think of this Ike dollar? It is in a PCGS MS63 holder as a type 2.

I am looking for opinions on value, eye appeal, etc.

I want to see your rainbow toned coins too!

Thanks!

The obverse is nice... but.... and isn't there always a but? The reverse looks mottled and almost AT.

I've seen that coin on this forum before. Years ago I think.

Yup, it's been mine the whole time. I just "found" it buried in with my other coins a little while ago.

    Beautiful Coin !

Wow. Wish my Chinese Classics looked so good. image

Hey - BRAINSTORM. I'm going to ask my fav China Coin Dude if he can look for any rainbows in his classic inventory. With any luck they were stored in optimal conditions for toning. I think he's been dipping his coins so there's a good chance they started out toned.

You know how those Chinese are. Just don't yet know that us Americans prefer our Classics TONED.

  • Does anyone know a fair value for this coin?

I would say for an MS63, somewhere between $50-$150....Depending on the eye-appeal. However, TeleTrade has been getting some
really high numbers for nicely toned Ikes lately.

  • Fair market value for a nicely toned Ike? Good question! I've studied prices for nicely toned coins of various US coin series and I must conclude that the nicely toned Ike seems to be the most inconsistent out of them all (MS and proof)! To the right person, the OP coin could go $500. If the coin makes an auction appearance and is met with an apathetic audience of bidders, I see $100 as a possible closing price. Realistically, I'd pin the value closer to the $500. But if you are going to get that kind of value for it, you'd better be prepared to sit on it a while till you find the right buyer.

Market value on toned Ikes varies greatly! It just comes down to who is looking at it and when.

Here is a 77-D toner in PCGS65.....could go anywhere from $20-$200?image

Who knows? There is no price guide for toners or for errors....it just comes down to how much
"impact" the eye-appeal is on a particular person at a certain time, and MAYBE what they need
to fill a hole in their "Toner" Set.

    Brian (Gandyjay),

You HAVE to get rid of the scanner and scans and get a digital camera.....please image

To the OP.....I'd probably be willing to give $30-$40 for the one pictured....reason is that I consider that amount to be discretionary and my son would like the colors, so it would be considered entertainment costs.....kind of like buying an xbox360 game; get some enjoyment from it but understand you may never get back what you paid for it.

Brian just needs a newer scanner. From what I understand, the one he uses is like 20 years old!

It's an AGFA SnapScan 1212....How ever old that is?!
I would say close to 10 years?....
    Brian
  • I had a Agfa SnapScan 1212 and used it for coins so much it finally crapped out on me about 5 yrs ago. It did better with colors if you laid the coin on the scan bed at a slight angle. I would prop it up on one side with something thin like a toothpick or a flip.

The thing about toned IKES is, they are always making more of them. Lots of collectors completed BU sets in the late 70's- early 80's and just left the albums on a shelf relatively undisturbed for 30 years. So it is not uncommon to come across a set with fairly uniform nice concentric color on most of the coins. If the collector had an eye for quality, those sets can net a nice profit today!
