Who remembers " New England Rare Coins " ?

I think it was Steve Ivy's company that went bankrupt/belly up around 1986 .........

I remember ordering a 1953 Proof 66 PCGS Half dollar from David Hall Rare Coins about that same time @ 130$ ;

I was pretty disappointed when they called back and said they were out of stock .........

What do YOU think ; more then 20 years later I can buy that coin for around the same 130$ ..........

hummm , I think I was lucky they were out of stock as that 130$ invested for more then 20 freakin years would have yielded

ZERo percent profit !!!

    Is I recall, I associate them with Jim Halperin, not Steve Ivy

    I remember buying a mint state Mercury Dime from them around '80 or '81...I was 13 or 14 years old. This was the first time I had ever bought a coin through the mail for any "real" money. I think I paid $40 for it but I don't remember what it was. I do remember I was sooo excited the day it arrived in my mail box. image

    Those guys have done great since then.
    I manage money. I earn money. I save money .
    I give away money. I collect money.
    I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

    Zero profit Paul but the pride and joy of ownership can't be calculated.

  • I had catologs from both Steve Ivy Rare Coins and New England Rare coins, along with Kurt Kruger, Joe Flynn, Stacks ,etc.
  • Steve Ivy had Steve Ivy Rare Coins in the 70s and 80s. I still have a few of his coins in my registry with his name and year purchased noted. I also have two New England Rare Coin Gallery coins in my buffalo registry from 1974; a 1913-S type 2 purchased for $90 that is now in a 63 PCGS holder, and a 1931-S for $29.95 that is in a PCGS 66 holder.

    NERCG in the late 1970's was owned by Jim Halpern and many, many current dealers gained their knowledge from Jim. Back then there was a very loose grading "industry" wide and many coins that would grade MS64 or MS65 today were marketed as MS67, etc.

    Jim sold NERGC and the people that bought it turned it into a telemarketing outfit and later went bankrupt. From what I know, the later abuses and problem associated with NERCG should not be placed on JH. He formed a partnership with his biggest competetor, Steve Ivy and the rest is history.

    If you really want to know the story, go to lunch with him! He is a facinating guy!
