Alright: With hat in hand: I was wrong! Wrong, I tell you!! pmh1nic, dbbldie55! How could this be? PCGS has now graded a SECOND NY state quarter MS69. I never thought this would happen let alone so quickly.
I'll be more guarded and careful with my quick opinions regarding these Modern coins from here on out.

  • Congratulations on the new NY ms69, Mitch. I'm still in the contest.
Also congratulations may be in order, again, as you seem to be making quite the foray into the "classics" as well.

Braddick: Bear in mind that PCGS had graded -1- MS68FS "classic" Jefferson nickel in its roughly 15 year operation before grading no less than (2) this very week!!! Would ANYONE have thought that!! Is this the "beginning of the end" of the Jefferson nickel market? Are the "floodgates" now open?

Imho, just the opposite. The two nickels that achieved the MS68FS grade were EXCEPTIONAL COINS. One of them was possibly the neatest Jefferson I have ever handled in a slab (although that 1943/42 I got in this week was incredible as well). Likewise, the second MS69 NY(p) state quarter was a beautiful coin and, imho, deserving of the grade. It sold very quickly.

As a side-note several unheard of PCGS Commems were also "made" this week. One in particular should be the "talk of the Long Beach" show!! I'll leave this for Laura to discuss image Wondercoin.

  • Mitch,

Interesting that 3 of the 4 MS-68FS nickels are still war nickels. Have you noticed if the populations on the early nickels in 67FS is creeping up, or is the phenomenon just for the war nickel group.

Damn Pat, I just read this and you have already beat me to the "punch" against you. Must be nice regardless of the Pop.

What does that do to the price (we don't know what the first one was worth anyways). I have heard that even a Pop 2 does not kill a price, and may even help it as more people know they may be in the running for a piece.

Wondercoin, I take it this is not the coin that you gave to Dale for me image

Keith: The pops on the early nickels (and post war nickels) in MS67FS are, in fact, creeping up. There is intense submissions of these coins like never before imho. It is common, however, for most of these freshly made coins to sell out immediately, as witnessed by the few I got in earlier this week. If MS65 Walkers with pops of 8 or 9 coins can fetch up to $100,000/coin (e.g. 1919(d)) it is not crazy to envision coins like Jeffersons with pops "skyrocketing" to a mere 2, 3 or 4 coins to command a few thousand dollars image Wondercoin
