What is the likelihood I receive these???

I just won an auction on the Bay for some dark side bullion (I was married and my daughter was born in the year of the Ox)...The auction was a multiple listing for a 1oz silver coin PLUS 25 $.42 postage stamps and I won 5 lots at $13.07 ($5 below spot for the silver alone). He has good feedback, and sold a few lots of silver eagles, but do you think I am actually going to make out on this one?

Edited to add - I don't think the seller had a really strong idea on how this type of auction would play out or he was hoping for a better showing. I also picked up 5 lunar tigers plus the stamps, but that auction ended at $16.

  • You consider 97.8% good feedback? I sure don't.

    This is somewhat concerning.

    Neg FB received:

"I never received the merchandise. I ordered this in April and it's June, now."

    Tough call.

Yeah, but that was a file to unlock a cell phone, not a physical item. I read the neg in his file and was ok with that one.

  • Just after bumping I checked my e-mail:

Dear customer. Thanks for your promptness in paying however I have a
terrible situation. After the auction had ended and I realized I had
sold all of the coins I packed the coins and had them ready for
shipment (so as money came in I could immediately drop them off at the
post office). The coins where in a large box in my car. Tuesday
morning I woke up to see my car had been vandalized outside of my
home; the car stereo, my wallet, cell phone, and about $3000 worth of
silver coins and 1 silver bullion were stolen (in addition to my new
Toyota window being broken - $500).

And then he went on to offer a refund or I could take it up with his insurance co.

I just KNEW this would bomb out!

File a non-performing seller claim. Don't let this a-hole off the hook.

Where do you file it on EBay?

  • Ask for a copy of the police report. If he didn't file a police report the insurance company won't pay. If he refuses to sent you a copy of the police report then he is probably making the whole story up. Give him negative feedback if he won't give you a copy of the police report.
  • Already asked for the police report. I am the total cynic, but I also know that stuff happens (I just think this would be a REALLY big coincidence if it were true).

When did the auction close? I am curious how much time between auction close and his email. Was there enough time for a robbery to happen?

I am sure he is lying but just curious.

I wouldn't even go through the trouble of determining if this is a true story or not for the cost involved. I would simply assume this story was made up because that coin sold a few bucks short of melt.

Only one reason I can think of not to give a negative:

If that story is bogus, I suspect these items will relist at some point within the next few months.
Wouldn't it be cool to bid on the items later, and win the auction again in the same circumstances...for under melt. D'oh!

If you win that subsequent auction, you might not want to have given the negative feedback on this one.
(Giving him a negative might make this scenario more likely)

Closed last night at 8:30 EST and got the e-mail this morning at 11:15 so yes, it is possible.
