What's the story on the 1949 Bowman name variations?

Is it possible to complete the 240 cards set in one variation or will there have to be a mix of both? What was Bowman's reason for the variations?

Thanks!

How dare you ask a sports card related question on these forums!

You are one sick, demented puppy.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

My understanding is cards #1-#108 were originally printed w/o the name on front. #109-240 all have names on the front.

.......But #4, 78, 83, 88, 98, 109, 124, 127 (originally from series 1-4) were reprinted on the last series sheet (7th series) with variations in the front (added name) or variations in the back ie script or printed (tougher) name on back.

A good guide like the 2008 SCD Standard Catalog has all this info.

So to answer the question, no, you cant have a set with all names on front or no names on front...... they will be mixed.
  • Thanks for the info. I was looking around and found this article also.

How about 1949 Bowman Chrome? were there any variations in that set?

I have a 1949 Bowman Chrome of Satchel Paige if anyone is interested. Should grade pretty high, too. It might be a refractor but it's hard to tell with such an old card.
