Looking at the Heritage archives it looks like other PCGS 65s in the 1880-89 range (with generally similar catalog values) are going for between $2000 and $3000, with most appearing in the $2100-2300 range.

I too, looked at Heritage. The problem I see is that the 80 had 1,600 minted and the
other dates are 5,000 and up so I expect a much higher price on this baby.

The 1880 gold dollar is a strange one. Despite its microscopic mintage, a huge number of them were saved and ultra-high grades are common. MS65 is actually on the low end of what's usually seen. Circ. examples are essentially impossible to find.
    When in doubt, don't.

I wouldn't think "much" higher; there aren't enough date collectors for these things.

Click the "Auction prices realized" link on the front of the PCGS welcome page, go to gold dollars, and click on the blue link for 1880 PCGS average price. Unfortunately, there is not any very recent sales information for coins as low as MS65.
    When in doubt, don't.

Generic 65's are proably in the $2200-$2300 range today. An very nice specimen could be 10% more.

I tend to look for MS64's and I don't recally running into many 1880's. Low mintage dates are always popular, even if saved.

i would be more concerned about the pops honestly. if the coin is
common in 65 even with a low mintage i would pay little to no premium
above the price guides and auction results.

if a top pop... gosh only knows how much it would cost premium wise.

i only know half eagles well, not dollars! good luck.

Thanks all, just informed the seller with all the information that you all so kindly provided! Said he may will
it to me but won't sell as he paid over 10K for it back in 88 or 89.

It may be an MS-66 or 67 in a 65 holder?

Generic Type 3's were listed on blue sheet for $7200 back in mid 1989 and often realized another 10% wholesale on top of that bringing it to $8K wholesale. So $10K retail back then would not have been impossible, esp if the coin is as Oreville says, a possible 66 or 67.

Every once in a while I run into sellers who won't let anything go for less than they paid in 1980 or 1990. You invest time to do the research and when they find out they are buried for life, you become their focus as a rip off artist. After several more attempts to sell to other dealers, they realize the truth and dump them...not to you of course since you were the bearer of bad news. Funny how that works.

Oreville and Roadrunner are both right on. I won't get the coin. He'll do more research on his own and call or visit
the local B&M outlets. Then it will disappear and I won't have my little jewel.
I don't know how to discern a 65 from a 66 or 67 in small gold. Just not my cup of tea.

I'll watch the obits and then maybe I'll get the "you inherited" call from an attorney?
