I've been offered a 1880 PCGS MS65 Gold
dollar in an old green holder.
Need help determining price as I just can't find auction results. Can y'all help this old Vegas boy?
I'd really like to have this specimen but don't want to rip or get ripped.
thanks,
bob

65 $4,000 $2,720 $2,175 $2,075 $2,075 $3,000
All over the place
<< <i>Looking at the Heritage archives it looks like other PCGS 65s in the 1880-89 range (with generally similar catalog values) are going for between $2000 and $3000, with most appearing in the $2100-2300 range. >>
I too, looked at Heritage. The problem I see is that the 80 had 1,600 minted and the
other dates are 5,000 and up so I expect a much higher price on this baby.

I wouldn't think "much" higher; there aren't enough date collectors for these things.
I tend to look for MS64's and I don't recally running into many 1880's. Low mintage dates are always popular, even if saved.

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
common in 65 even with a low mintage i would pay little to no premium
above the price guides and auction results.
if a top pop... gosh only knows how much it would cost premium wise.
i only know half eagles well, not dollars! good luck.
it to me but won't sell as he paid over 10K for it back in 88 or 89.

<< <i>Thanks all, just informed the seller with all the information that you all so kindly provided! Said he may will
it to me but won't sell as he paid over 10K for it back in 88 or 89.

heh, i wonder what great dealer sold that to them back then?
i also bet that same dealer is selling today telling people they cannot
lose out on such bargains as there are today!

He's got a receipt but I didn't see it. I asked and he said the firm is out of Florida. Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Every once in a while I run into sellers who won't let anything go for less than they paid in 1980 or 1990. You invest time to do the research and when they find out they are buried for life, you become their focus as a rip off artist. After several more attempts to sell to other dealers, they realize the truth and dump them...not to you of course since you were the bearer of bad news. Funny how that works.

the local B&M outlets. Then it will disappear and I won't have my little jewel.
I don't know how to discern a 65 from a 66 or 67 in small gold. Just not my cup of tea.
I'll watch the obits and then maybe I'll get the "you inherited" call from an attorney?
