Does this means the 1909-2009 anniversary cents will be in bronze for old times sake, or steel?

  • I think the legislation called for 1 of the pennys to be made in the same manner as that of an orginal 1909 cent. However, that was for one specific coin to be sold as a collectors item. Anybody else?

Reading that article linked above, it sounds more like a negotiating ploy to me. The Mint didn't fail to renew, they "opted out" of an existing agreement, which makes me think the Mint wants a change in the terms of their contract rather than a change in material.

Oh I'm sure after 2008 we'll see steel cents and nickels at the very least.

HOPEFULLY......The Mint will dust off the original 1909 Brenner designed Galvano and use it for the 2009 "collectors" cent. It indeed still does exist, and that would be the only way that the design could be replicated. Modern engravers just dont "have it". Any attempt to re do the design would be futile without using the original galvano.

Copper futures are way down...world demand is down, Maybe the government has acted a bit too quickly opting out of the existing metal.

Did the Mint "outsource" production to the Chinese counterfeiters ?

  • Did anyone else get proof sets from 58 and 59?

With the new penny designs, this could be interesting........
