Looking to pick up a few cards.

I have been out of the card collecting game for some time now and there are a few cards I am looking to possibly buy. I just wanted your opinion on what these cards may be worth. I know Becket's standards are not as stricts as PSA and these cards would probably grade alot lower if submitted to PSA. The Mays card looks real OC but i'm not sure if that is common for this year. Thanks

  • BCCG is a part of the Beckett grading family but the standards are not as strict as say a BGS or BVG graded card. Their 8 might actually be a 5/6 so why not just buy a PSA 5/6 of the cards you have listed??
  • you can find better raw specimens.

I did not know their was a difference. Can you explain the diference between BCCG, BGS, BVG? Thanks for the help.

I usualy buy raw, but I get nervous buying older cards raw do to the chance they may be trimmed. I'm not saying that more recent cards can't be trimmed it just seems that it is more unlikely.

You may also want to ask these questions on the Beckett boards. You do realize where you are don't you??

Ya i do realize where i am i'm not an idiot. 80% of the graded cards I have are PSA cards but the three cards I am interested seem to be fairly priced and they just happend to be graded by beckett. I have never purchased beckett products before and I figured I could get a straight unbiased answer here. I am not trying to start any trouble I am just not as savy when it comes to card grading and the guys in this form seem to be straight shooters and will give me an honest oppinion. All I wanted to know was a dollar value on what these cards in this conditon would be worth.

I would not buy any of the displayed cards.

Better to find some PSA cards in the price range you want to pay.

  • Just my opinion but here is the grades I think these would be in PSA holders (if not trimmed)

    57 Mays (PSA 6OC)
58 Koufax (PSA 5) at best
68 Bench (PSA more hooks then a fishing lure)

You would be better off staying away from all three

I like the Koufax but if creased under the S in Sandy I'd pass); the other two I'd definitely pass on (Mays - centering, Bench - trimmed).

That said, make sure you pay less for the Koufax than a PSA 5 would cost (I'd only pay $45 - $50 delivered). If creased under the S in Sandy it is a $20 card.

Be careful when evaluating price and value. There is a reason those cards are not in a better holder. The owner of those cards knows that they would be worth more in a PSA holder with the same grade. So there's a reason they are in a BCCG holder- to give the impression of higher value.

    Mmmm,
Clearly they're not going to grade anywhere near the grades shown in a PSA holder .

Being their standards are obviously not as high as PSA's
I'm guessing the price for the cards would also not be as high , or are they tring to charge a PSA 8' and 9' rate for cards that are more along the lines of PSA 5'S OR 6'S ?

Why is the last letter on those flips missing? That Bench is near mir or better? wtf?

I agree with the others. Why not spend a little bit more and be happy. Like the Mays card is at 22.50 right now, but you can do a buy it now on a nice centered PSA 5 for $79 right now. As far as the others, you are better off buying them raw. Try putting a post of your wants on the for sale board. You might find something from someone who has upgraded those cards.
Remember it's a buyers market out there. So be patient.

Maybe BCCG has Error Slabs out there? I guess that adds to the value of their slabs or maybe the seller has a scanner he bought on special that doesn't scan the last letter or numbers?? image In all seriousness, I agree with your wtf.

+1 for my 400th post. lol

I ditched the BGGS cards and I decided to pick up these two instead. I payed right around $80 for each of these. Do you think this are fair price for these cards? The BGGS Bench card I was looking at sold for $143.00.

when for instance the mays card says '8, excellent or better'. the part you need to pay attention to is the 'excellent or better' part. excellent is the psa 5 grade. so it's probably a 5.

I really dont get BCCG. It's the el cheapo version of BGS? And 8-excellent or better??? What the hell is that?? do they have a 15 point grading scale or something?

As Boopotts pointed out in another thread, many BCCG cards do cross over into PSA slabs, but not in terms of the number grade. As Ahman fan mentioned, look at the verbal grade- An EX or better card should cross over into a PSA 5 slab. Given that many BCCG cards are overgraded by one, I would expect it to end up in a PSA 4/5 slab along with the Koufax, and the Bench end up in a PSA 6 slab.
