Went to an estate sale today.

Let me start by saying, I quit attending estate sales and auctions years ago. It seemed like all they ever had was pitiful junk.
With aforementioned pitiful junk being bid up to 10 times its value.

Then, this week, my dad tells me he is going to an estate sale Saturday. He is interested in a car they are auctioning.
He mentions that there is a coin collection. Naturally I am interested so I scan the auction ad. There is no mention of a collection.
I call the auctioneer and he says he forgot to put the coins in the ad. There are close to 60 lots.
Hmmm.. I decide to go thinking not many bidders will show up for the coins.

I get up early, drive an hour, and get there in time to view 60 lots of magazine ad novelty sets.
It wasn't so bad though. I had forgotten how much fun it could be to watch people bid 10 times actual value for pitiful junk.

I sometimes go to a weekly auction about 30 minutes north of where I live. It also amazes me how much people pay for stuff they can get WalMart for a fraction of the cost.

Yep. I thought of that too.
" Investment" grade coins can appreciate nicely.
On the other hand you could buy the cheapest stuff you could find on Ebay and send it to an estate sell.

  • I've picked up some good stuff at public sales/auctions. Two different times I've bought a circulated roll of 1939 Jefferson nickles for face value. Each time I got a Doubled Monticello.image

Granted, there is junk. You just need to know how to sift through it. image

-LOL i was thinking the same thing...we should get together a bunch of coins from people at the forum and hit up an estate sale...re-energize the collection pocketbook.

I've been to 3 or 4 local sales in the past 2 years - the same guy shows up and buys most of the classic gold - usually some Double Eagles, PCGS-62, 63, maybe a 64, a $5.00 or $10.00 Indian or two......at what I consider to be market prices, not too high and not too low.

He's not a local dealer, but he's got an appetite for gold! I've been trying to keep track of the gold coins that are being sold, just to see if he's a shill for the auctioneers, but I decided that it wasn't worth my time to prove anything unless I was going to be a bidder, which I'm not.

The last auction, I did buy a roll of Indian Cents (for $100) which turned out to be in pretty nice shape.

Trade in value on the car was 1500.00
    Retail value was 3500.00

    Hammer price 5000.00
Nope, he didn't buy the car either.
It was an old escort I believe.
He was going to park the Chevy 2500 and try to save some gas.
You can buy a lot of gas with 5000.00 though.
