<< <i>Why would anyone sending $500 in coins not get insurance? Did you pay for insurance or did he just not offer it? >>

He didn't offer it (I'm not crazy lol, if he had it as optional, I would have bought it). I thought it was included because shipping was $12.60 and it was just a little PCGS coin. >>

For $12 effen 60 he better have insured it. If you are a frequent buyer it would behoove you to get a PO box. As a buyer you have as much obligation to provide a secure shipping location as the seller does to properly handle and secure your purchase.

"...Now, I would ask the seller to refund half of the payment you sent via paypal, and that when you receive the coin, then you will send it back. I doubt he will agree, but I would try to do this before it gets ugly and so your not out the entire $500. He can't leave you a neg so you also have that in your arsenal. ..."

The buyer will NOT be out ONE CENT in this matter.

PayPal will refund the buyer as soon as the seller CANNOT produce Signature Confirmation.
    (Required by PayPal over $250.)

MANY sellers simply do not seem to understand how PayPal works. Sellers who follow the
PP rules do just fine with Seller Protection; the others do not.

<< <i>Sorry this happened to you. Yet another example you want to be sure every single package is insured by USPS, or a reputable insurance company. Not no ebay seller that decides they are in the insurance business and pocket the cash. I Just say NO to "self-insurers." And it don't matter who it is.... board member or not. >>

Don't trust anybody except large companies, eh? I've never been frustrated dealing with a large company. Have you? Oh wait, you just need to be able to understand an Indian accent and you're fine... --Jerry >>

Maybe it's time I post the $7000 Heritage coin story again.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Look, I do what I want, you do what you want. I never said I don't trust anybody but large company's. If I'm paying for insurance, yes I want it from somebody that IS in the insurance business. I'll take my chances with them way before I will with an ebay seller that is a stranger to me, and they decide they are going to be my insurance agent.

So please, save your sarcastic assumptions.

Also, I left a note in my mail box asking my carrier if he remembered the package and the note had the tracking info. He wrote back saying he never had a package yesterday... so he acknowledged that he never delivered it. Can I use this to my advantage when I go talk to the postmaster?

"You guys just don't get it. USPS insurance is ridiculously expensive. If you do a good job packaging, labeling and addressing (with barcodes) and every time you think about insuring a package instead you put 50% of the insurance fee in an envelope marked "petty cash for losses" that envelope will grow and grow. Use it to pay out losses and in the long term you'll come out ahead. $500 is no big deal to a large volume dealer. I spend more than than on shipping in a good month (and I'm a little guy). I have a loss every couple of years. I self insure every package that the buyer doesn't want to pay insurance on. If you buy a coin from me, don't insure it and it gets lost do you expect me to replace it? I do. And I do it out of my pocket. An added benefit is that I never have to fill out an insurance claim form. I hear that's no fun to try to collect--not a problem for me.

Don't feel sorry for the seller. that's just a cost of doing business."

    -- Jerry

I totally agree, I do not care how a seller insures, as long as they know who is responsible if the package does not arrive. Jerry sounds like a class Buss person .

Yes....surely...you need to talk to your Postmaster face to face.....and explain this situation...and let him see the note from your carrier (Make a copy first so he can keep the COPY, you keep original)......your Postmaster should handle this...and someone's head should role if in fact your carrier didn't have the package to begin with.

Is this carrier your normal carrier? Many have substitutes right now due to vacations.........

Remember, you're just talking to the postoffice to help the seller avoid a loss. I being cheerful and showing an attitude that you trust them to find it inspires them to try to live up to your trust. --Jerry

I wouldn't agree to that. As I said earlier, it will most likely show up soon. As a seller I would expect a reasonable time for delivery. Sure there may be bumps along the way. I had a buyer initiate a dispute last week on a package that was 2 weeks in transit. It showed up the next day. The money is still in paypal limbo waiting for him to get around to releasing it. --jerry

<< <i>This happened to me before, not with coins but with a GameBoy Console. I never received the package and USPS tracking says it was delivered. Filed a dispute with Paypal but the seller won as he was able to provide the tracking # that said delivered. I'm sure it was delivered elsewhere but they probably didn't want to return it once they saw what it was. So I lost $80.

Hope you'll get your package. >>

Missed this thread the first time around, but if this happens to you again and paid with CC, just go directly to the CC company and file a charge back. You will get your money back.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did.

How do you actually know that the seller mailed an empty envelope to some address within your zip code.

It may have gone down this way:
Packages that are addressed properly can get delivered to incorrect addresses.

    Just playing devil's advocate...

Anyway, that's not your problem either. But it might explain the harrassment from the seller; perhaps it is not a scam as you think. They may think you are pulling a scam.

Glad you got your money back.

    Glad everything worked out.

I agree, I will not buy anything on e-bay unless they take CC through pay-pal.

So you know now why postal insurance can be a good thing despite what 3 or 4 folks want you to believe.

I am also curious how it was determined that the item was an envelope sent to a business in your zip code.
  • 1. sellers ID ?
    2. how do you know he pulled this scam on others?

3rd. my postman is awesome, BUT on the weekends his replacement is a moron who left a package that I was supposed to sign for... HE SIGNED FOR IT himself and left it. Didnt even bother to ring the bell.

If you're so confident that this was a scam to steal your money, a criminal act, don't you think it would be appropriate to provide us with the Seller's ID?

Also check out this account, parisrodriguez-2008, they even made a guide about me and sent me an email harassing me and he claims to have gotten a 1 oz PAE for a $1 from the above seller. Um... I'm pretty sure this is a scam... for you doubters.
