Poll: Where Would You Rate Yourself Regarding Knowledge Of The Hobby?

Obviously (to me at least), there are some very educated and knowledgeable people here about the hobby. Just out of curiosity, where would you rank yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 regarding knowledge of the hobby? A ranking of 1 would be no knowledge regarding the hobby and a ranking of 10 would be preeminent knowledge regarding the hobby.

Personally, I think I know a great deal about the hobby. That said, I'd be a fool if I gave myself a score higher than a 5. You?

    ".......Knowledge Of The Hobby?..."

    ///////////////////////////////

"The Hobby" is a pretty broad designation.

    A super-knowledgeable "specialist" might have to rate himself a 2 or a 3.

    A super-knowledgeable "generalist" might have to rate himself a 3 or a 4.

As a fairly experienced generalist, I give myself about a 2.

BUT, the most important ability one can have is knowing how/where to
find the answer/solution to questions/issues surrounding the hobby. In
that regard, I rate myself a 10. (There are many such 10s here.)

There are a wide range of topics that people could/can rate themselves as far as Knowledge goes..

Doctored cards- Im clueless, call me crazy but 99% of the time Im satisfied if its in a PSA or SGC holder and it has decent eye appeal for the grade.

Pre Grading Raw Cards- Im awful at, to the point where I wont even waste my time buying them anymore- Im like 2-20 on buying a card in hopes it grades out at a 7!

I try to learn as much as I can about Vintage Football as thats my main focus and I would consider myself an 8 on the subject, unfortunately there is not a whole lot out there outside of Pop Reports and SP lists on my favorite set, the 52 Large Bowman series.

    Vintage Auto's-Clueless a 1
    Modern inserts and #'ed Autos-Clueless another 1

I've been collecting no other cards but Mickey Mantles since 1956 .... I feel pretty well versed in that part of the hobby.

Maybe I'm just showing my age, but it seems like this hobby used to be a lot more fun and interesting before the 1970s.

Knowledge of the hobby was easier when you could not only name the players of your team, but also the starting lineup of nearly every team in either league.

The All Star Game used to be played by the best in the game, not the most popular; and I never asked "Who's that?"

My expertise in today's hobby is zilch and I'm proud of it image

Wow, you guys are pretty hard on yourselves!

Compared to most on here in the Vintage category (baseball only) I'm probably about a 4. I've learned a lot about mainstream and some about the other sets (Johnstown Cookie's,Exhibits, Redheart etc.) from the 40's on through the early 60's but have little knowledge about the sets and cards from the late 60's on through the 70s, although I don't really want to learn more about that time period. If I'm ever at a cardshow and see some vintage stuff I now know a little bit more about just how rare some series are, or the difference between backs, etc.

I know that the 80's sucked, and the 90's had a lot of inserts.... and that's all anyone needs to, and should know about back then!

When it comes to modern sets (2000-present) compared to you guys on here, I would probably give myself a 9. Since I collect modern guys like Chipper, Carl Crawford and other assorted players I tend to keep up with the new products, all of the variations and parallels, along with the knowledge that I should never open modern packs image

Now on broad general knowledge of all things baseball card related.......probably a 2. On any type of card.....-27.

  • That's a very broad question you've asked!

I think everyone is probably most knowledgable about the items they focus on.

I'm probably one of the five most knowledgable people alive when it comes to 1977 Topps Mexican Football, but I'm pretty clueless about anything before 1950 or after 1990. One the other hand, I consider myself to be pretty knowledgable about the Topps test issues of the late 60's and early 70's as I have at one point or another collected just about every single one of them.

    Matt:

Wanna buy the toppsmexican.com website? image With it, you can probably convince #3 or #4 that you have them beat...

I really need to get back in there and update it. Time to revamp the prices again.

BTW, did you finish your set, yet? Last I knew, you were down to 2 cards...

I thought I knew everything about this hobby but then I just found out that there's cards depicting a Giants baseball team and a Giants football team - What's up with that using the same name?

If there is a question regarding Mark Brunell cards - I rate myself an overall 8+...just recently found out that there was a "2001 Quantum Leaf Retail version of the base cards that are not listed in Beckett nor Tuff Stuff (SCD).

I don't think anyone can be a "10" regardless of how specialized your collecting niche is. There is always something to learn in the hobby.

I am a generalist in Football from mid 1990s - early 2000s and would rate my knowledge "5"

    Otherwise "0.5" on everything else!

For the period I collect, I'd rate my knowledge level a 6 or 7. Give me a 0.5 for pre-1951 and post 1991.
