Where to best sell Gold Pandas?

A friend is interested in selling 100 or so 1 oz. gold pandas from the 1980's. I didn't have any good ideas beyond Panda America, APMEX and MONEX. What advice would you offer?

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

    I'll buy them cheap. image

Really the places you mentioned should be pretty good. You can try selling them for melt on our BST, I'm sure there will be a least a few sold.

A few 1/10 oz. I told him to go make a list of dates and denominations. When I get it I'll share.

Did a search on Gecko - apparently that's not a forum handle. At least I didn't see any posts by Gecko in the search results. Who is Gecko? I see the little laughing emoticons so I'm guessing there is some inside joke there that I might be missing...

Thanks for the posts thus far.

Tell him to be sure to check to see if any of the dates command a premium. It would be a shame for your friend to let any of them go for melt when he could have gotten double his money by knowing the fair market value of what he was selling.

I just ran down a list of prices from Panda America. The 1982's should command a preimum. Theboz11 on the darkside forum clued me into 1982.

The prices I ran down are:

    1982 1 oz panda $2,990 raw
    1982 1 oz panda $3,149 MS-66 NGC
    1982 1 oz panda $3,249 MS-67 NGC
    1982 1 oz panda $3,499 MS-68 NGC
    1982 1 oz panda $5,199 MS-69 NGC

    1983 1 oz panda $1,406 raw
    1983 1 oz panda $1,479 MS-65 NGC
    1983 1 oz panda $1,880 MS-68 NGC
    1983 1 oz panda $2,053 MS-69 NGC

    1984 1 oz panda $1,411 raw
    1984 1 oz panda $1,482 MS-67 NGC
    1984 1 oz panda $1,528 MS-68 NGC
    1984 1 oz panda $1,703 MS-69 NGC

    1985 1 oz panda $1,110 raw
    1985 1 oz panda $1,158 MS-69 NGC

    1986 1 oz panda $1,261 MS-67 NGC
1986 1 oz panda $1,194 MS-68 NGC (funny this is cheaper than MS-67)
    1986 1 oz panda $1,271 MS-69 NGC

1987 1 oz panda $1,376 PROOF raw (didn't know these were issued in proof)
    1987 1 oz panda $1,158 raw
    1987 1 oz panda $1,189 MS-68 NGC
    1987 1 oz panda $1,356 MS-69 NGC

1987 also had a bunch of "friendship" pandas for specific areas (cities and countries - too many to list here)

    1988 1 oz panda $1,158 raw

    1989 1 oz panda $1,187 raw

If you are quoting Panda America prices, just be aware that they are on the high side and you probably will NOT get those prices. image

I only listed them as relative comparisions of value by date. I'm sure no one will get those prices by selling bullion. But I found it interesting to see the 1982's as a kind of flier point. There must be some interest in the 1982's beyond bullion. The rest seem bullionish to me.

Yes. You are, or course, correct. I should have listed these out. I was just too lazy to add four more coins with their various MS grades to the list. I fess up. I"m lazy. image

AFAIK, the reason 1982 commands high premium is because most of them were made into jewelry and with a lot of collectors wanting the complete run, they would have to ante up for the supply vs demand factor.

Presuming they are bullion, I'd sell them to Silvertowne.

[edited to add: there seems to be some premium for some of these dates, so please ignore the above advice image ]

  • My opinion:

All PCGS and NGC MS69 pandas command a premium in excess of the grading fees.

The quality of the early gold Pandas was inconsistent; from around 2000 they are consistently uniform in quality.

NGC is more liberal in their grading of Pandas and hence do not sell for as much as PCGS pandas.

Check the NGC and PCGS population reports to get a feel for the relative scarcity of the gold Pandas. Check eBay, APMEX, etc for a feel for prices.

If you are not in a big hurry to sell your holdings, exam each gold piece carefully to determine its quality. At the least, the scarcer ones that appear flawless should be send to PCGS.

The number of PCGS gold pandas offered for sale recently has significantly lessened due for the most part by the rise in price for gold.

The current offering of gold Pandas for sale on eBay via Buy-It-Now is artificially high due to the Microsoft 20% discount incentive.
