Is this Ted Williams card graded low?

I'm in the market for a 1939 Play Ball Ted Williams rookie. Levi has one on Ebay, a PSA 4 MK. I emailed him because I could not figure out where the MK came from. He said there looks to be light scratches on the back and a light wax(?) stain on the Red Sox on back. Both to me seem to be VERY slight. I think the card has good corners for a 4 and decent eye appeal. With my Microsoft discount and Big Crumbs kickback I would end up paying $763 in the long run. After looking at other 3 through 5's images on VCP, I just think this may be graded a bit harshly, or maybe it is just a high end 4 despite the qualifier. But thats just me and I wanted the opinions of the other experts on the board. I've included photos, please let me know what you all think.

  • I think it is a high end PSA 4, maybe good for a resub (4.5) since I can't see a (MK) mark on it . maybe in hand it shows up better or it might come back PSA 4 or 4.5 (ST), either way it is a nice looking Williams. the top L & R corners might hold it back from getting any higher than a 4. JMO

Looks like a nice card. A straight 4 or 5 would not be crazy.

That said, once you find the MK it will be a magnet for your eyes.

On the back, about mid way down, slightly to the right, where it says Red Sox in the bio, is the MK. As I said, very slight. So it's not just me, maybe it does have a shot at a higher grade.

  • a fantasic card to own image mark or otherwise.
  • I see the mark on the back, looking at the same genral area on the front it looks like the mark may be through the card look above the copyright symbol there is a dark spot that almost looks the same as the other.

I have a couple cards that got MK qualifiers with no writing anywhere. On real close examination it turned out to be pencil marks that had been erased.

Usually a stain like the one on the back gets ST, not MK. MK is for writing or removed writing.

    That said, it's a nice looking 4!

If it was just on the back like that I wouldn't think it would get the qualifier either. Could that be a pencil mark right above the W in Williams on the back?

I agree that there seems to be a mark on the back .... near the words "San Diego" and "Red Sox".

Looking at the front side, it could possibly be a candidate for a 4-5 PD.

I also agree that there is a mark in that area, it maybe could get a straight 4??

After some emailing back and forth, we came to a price we were both happy with. I can't get the Microsoft discount, but he gave me a price I can live with. I think it is a strong 4, and I may join the PSA Club so I can resubmit it in hopes of a small bump. Either way, I'm thrilled to get a card I've always wanted.

To me the MK looks to be in the blank area below "home runs"... maybe an erasure mark.

Upper left corner and background scuffs keep it in the 3-4 range IMO

I think it is a very solid card, the qualifier(as seen from the scans) is unnoticeable. Buy it, inspect it closely, then crack and re-submit asking for no qualifier, you may be pleasantly surprised. If you fear a downgrade, keep it as is and be happy you got a great card at a price you are content with.

After staring at the blank area below "home runs" for a couple of minutes, it does look like there might be eraser marks in the form of a 5 and a C.

Of course, if you stare at anything long enough, you tend to see things anyway .... I remember when I was a kid, sitting next to my demented cousin at our grandfather's funeral, and out of nowhere he asks me, " doesn't it look like grandpa's stomach is moving up and down like he's breathing?". Needless to say, to this day, I still have a problem at funerals. image

This is part of what Jim from 707 wrote back to me.

"The MK qualifier on the card is for some very light writing impressions on the back of the card, and there is no pencil or ink markings."

As far as the regrade goes, I'm on the fence about it. I guess I can tell better when it is hand. If nothing else I would like a reholder because the card will be displayed and I would like it to look its best. But to drop $150 or so on club fees, shipping and such for just a reholder is not worth it. I guess I will decide after it gets here.

As fattymacs said, I'm just going to enjoy a great card I got for a price I'm happy with.

Thank you all for the replies and feedback, all of what you posted helped me make my decision and it is much appreciated.

OMG Levi gave a discount! The sky is falling sell everything NOWWW! j/k nice card!

I am a HUGE fan of MK/ST qualifiers, I picked this up for the price of a PSA 2, one of th ehighest grade...but a small check mark. I think cards with small mk/st quals are a deal and a half!
    All about the eye appeal!

LOL! Thanks! I'll post better pics in the Mail Call thread when I get it.

I 110% agree with you about the qualifiers. It is all about eye appeal, and thats why I bought this one. As you guys preach on here, buy the card, not the holder. There are a lot of cards I can't afford in high grade, but with a qualifier and good eye appeal, I can get good deals. I also have a 1939 Exhibit Ted Williams with 9 showing that had writing on back. There is nothing printed on back, so I don't look at the back. I got it cheap, a card I may not have been able to afford otherwise.

That is a beautiful T3, one of the most visually appealing sets ever. I may have to buy a common so I can have one in my collection.

That's a beauty. Enjoy it and don't worry about the MK or the .5 bump

    "Molon Labe"

  • I would crack it and resubmit stating No Qualifiers...I think it would get a straight 3 or 4, and I would rather have a 3NQ than a 4MK....JMO

Edit to add - NICE CARD....wish it was mine!
